january program?

who else was admitted to the january program for the class of 2014? i didn't even know this existed! but hey, it could be a good option! feelings?

I was accepted into the January program too! It’s a very elite group of 40-50 students. haha
Here’s the link if you want to read more:

[January Program | The College | Arts & Sciences](http://college.artsci.wustl.edu/january-program)

After doing a little bit of research, here’s how i feel:
PRO: It saves money, you can put those AP credits to good use, you can take a break to work, or volunteer.
CON:You miss out on first semester of freshmen year, like making friends, and getting into the whole culture of campus.

I’m still waiting to hear from other schools, but getting into WUSTL is a awesome even if it is the January program. Congrats! See you next January?

I’m confused… Because I was accepted to the January program… Does that mean I start in January?? What is this?!

thanks @becoming! that pro/con list sounds pretty accurate. im in the same boat as you- waiting on a few more schools. let me know what you end up deciding!

@kkkristy yeah if you click the link that ‘becoming’ posted you’ll get a better feel for it, but basically its a small group of people that start classes in the second semester, instead of the first, but all else is the same. a bit unexpected, i would imagine? but still, congrats!

But, I kind of wanted to start school when everyone else starts school. Why did we not know about this?

i know its frustrating, i wanted to get in for fall admission as well. but its better than a rejection!!

How does WUSTL decide who is “January” and who is “fall?” Is it totally arbitrary or is there a criteria?

How does WUSTL decide who is “January” and who is “fall?” Is it arbitrary or is there a criteria?

I don’t know. I’m going to call the admissions office tomorrow and ask. I can post my info on here.

Hey everyone, I was also admitted into the January program. I don’t know whether to take it as a good thing or not?? I guess the working or studying abroad could be fun, but its kind of a shame to miss out on the first semester of classes :/

yeah, i’m curious as well. that would be great @kkkristy. maybe ask them if there is anyway to still be considered for fall admission. thanks!

Yea I got admitted and researched it. Personally I think it would nice financial wise but not that great academic wise. Not really a fan overall.

Here is a list of questions I was going to ask. Please add yours on, and I will ask them.

What is the January Program? Is this mandatory?

I was hoping to start school in the fall, is there any way I can do that?

What’s the purpose of the program?

How do you pick students for the January Program?

If I switch from Arts and Science to another College, will I be able to start school in the fall?

perhaps ask if we can be put on the wait list for regular admission simultaneously (while still holding our spot for the January Program)? thanks kkkristy. if any follow-up calls need to be made, i’m more than happy to do so.

I sent this to some people in PMs but guys feel free to message me about the January Scholars. I’m currently a jprog and would be happy to answer your questions.

Hey guys I was also a JPROG. I am an upperclassman now and nobody even remembers I was a JPROG. First I would like to say that it is not a bad thing that you were accepted into this program. That is my biggest pet peeve when people think it means you are not academically up to par with the rest of the freshman or something because I can tell you that is NOT the case. I was the the VP of my sorority and in charge of keeping track of the grade report. Our sorority has the highest GPA on campus and I had one of the top GPAs in my pledge class. I also have had classes with lots of other JPROGS and I can tell you that they are some of the top students!

I can understand that some of you might be confused or frustrated. It is a bit of a mystery how they decided who gets put in this program. You will notice that many of the JPROGS applied early decision and were very enthusiastic about going to Wash U. Although it is not explicitly stated, I believe that the January program is for students who are eager to come to Wash U and would likely still come regardless of how complicated they make it to get in. The January program is also for people who are very social. They definitely select kids who they think will transition well in the spring and meet friends easily. You will see that the JPROGS are some of the most sociable, friendly, and popular people on campus. In the past 2 years, 2 JPROGS have been presidents of the 6 sororities on campus. Several JPROGS also hold leadership positions on campus or within their fraternity or sorority.

Despite your efforts, there is absolutely no way out of starting in the spring. you can try all you want to get on a waitlist for the fall or try switching your college but it’s not gonna happen. Trust me, everyone has tried it!

If you are worried about meeting people by starting late…DONT BE. I think I made more friends as a freshman that the regular freshman. I highly encourage either the Freshman Summer Academic Program or the Fall Program. These programs are minimal work and GREAT FUN. Personally i did the fall program. we came in 4 weekends throughout the semester and had 3 hours of class thurs, fri, and sat and the rest of the time we had activities, fancy dinners, and went to parties. I like to say that the Fall Program is all the fun parts of college with out the stress and the work. Its a great way to meet JPROGS and other freshman. the regular freshman get really excited when the JPROGS come too. It’s like they get a new set of friends for the weekend when they are sick of hanging with just their freshman floor.

In terms of graduating on time…you will. I am a double major so I have a lot of extra credits to deal with but I came in with a few AP credits and I’ve taken a summer class here and there so I am definitely on track to graduate. I think I’m actually 3 credits away from being a year ahead.

Ok I think that covers a lot. Please feel free to ask any other questions. All I can say is that I loved being a JPROG and in the end I swear it won’t make a difference.

Thanks @Stacy213! That info really helped! I think I’m going to visit WashU again, specifically talking to jprogs and visiting the jprog dorms. Possibly doing an overnight?

Also, here is the information I’ve gathered from talking to an admissions rep.

What is the January Program? Is this mandatory?
Since WashU cannot offer everyone they want admission, they have students come in January when upperclassmen are studying abroad. Yes, it’s mandatory.

I was hoping to start school in the fall, is there any way I can do that?
Look above.

What’s the purpose of the program?
Look above

How do you pick students for the January Program?
Never answered. I’m going to guess based on the people in the CC forums, that they pick people who have shown a lot of interest in WashU (like myself). They know that no matter what, we’re probably going to WashU, so it ensures that we go to their college.

If I switch from Arts and Science to another College, will I be able to start school in the fall?
You will have to contact the people in charge of the January Program, but it seems useless based on @Stacy213’s post. Can’t hurt to try.

Can we be concurrently put on the waitlist for fall?
No.

Now that I think about it, I don’t think jprog would be too bad. It may be an unconventional college experience, but it’s WashU!!! People would love to take our place right now! I know I’m probably going to visit and try to do an overnight, so I can post my experiences on here as well.

I was accepted into the January program also. I applied ED and got deferred and now am into the January Program. This school really knows how to mess with our heads, doesn’t is? Ugh, I am so very frustrated and I have been a roller-coaster in terms of how I feel about this. But, right now, I am on a high and am accepting of the Jprog circumstance as an okay thing. I guess what Stacy213 said was accurate about a possible reason for January Program admittance: I don’t care how I was admitted, I am going there!

It would be great if they could just tell us the REAL reason we were put into this program. Even if it was something negative, it would help me cope. If we are in fact the lowest of the totem-pole (which I choose not to believe right now) then tell us! If we are just acceptees who showed so much interest and are thought to be capable of the awkward transition, that’s great, too. It’s the questioning that bothers me! I am so bummed about missing Freshmen Orientation and missing out on living in the South 40, though.

Stacy213 I have a question. Do we miss out on the Residential College Olympics and the rest of the dorm building competitions? Also, if we want to run for SU or CS40 would we miss out on that for freshmen year? Thanks!

Should I start a Facebook group? Looks like we’re going to be living together for a while so let’s get to know each other!

Hey fellow JProgers. When I got my acceptance letter to WASHU a couple of days ago, I couldn’t have been more surprised. (I literally screamed in my house for five minutes.) Then I realized that I got accepted to the January program and was a little confused. At first I didn’t think much of it because I thought that like Middlebury, WashU could accept you for fall. However, I realized shortly afterwards that this wasn’t the case. My dad called WashU the next day to ask them some questions and the WASHU rep responded by saying that the people who got accepted into the January Program, are the kids that they felt were too talented to be put on the waitlist, and housing spots open up with people studying abroad. The main thing though, is that we will be graduating in June 2014 and the school is very committed to having us all get integrated as quickly as possible.

So instead of feeling bad for ourselves for not getting into the fall program we should feel so lucky to know that we are not put on the waitlist purgatory that WASHU is infamous for. We all know how low WASHU’s acceptance rate is. I couldn’t feel more lucky to be accepted to this program, because even though it is in January we were all accepted to one of the best universities in the country!

Thanks Stacy213 for clarifying everything. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe it states on the letter that the kids who get into JanuaryProg are all socially and academically mature and they choose us because they know that we can handle it.

Once again I couldn’t be more excited. I’m still hearing from other schools, but WASHU is definitely one of my top choices.

Looking forward to meeting all of you soon!

We were definitely picked to be in this program based on interest! I mean, look at all of us here. We are all basically going to Wash U even though we have to start in January. So interest is a huge factor.

Also @Coconut1812, a facebook group would be good. You should post the link here when you make it.
