I saw on the UVa website that the January SAT is accepted but not recommended, and I'm not sure what this means. Will it count against me or make me look bad in admissions if I submit a January SAT score? If I get a higher SAT score in January, is it still better I submit a past lower score for the fear of looking like a lazy procrastinator? I really want to go to UVa so I don't want to take any risky actions. I already have a decent SAT score, but I just think I can improve it.

It’s not recommended because the scores don’t get released until some time in February. There is a chance your application will already have been read by the time those scores get sent to us.

Would one be sage with the December SAT score?

Dean J,

Can I submit my SAT scores right now so that I can have my file read, and then add the January one later just as an extra?

You can send scores as often as you wish. :)

Where I am confused is that files are already being read. If a student has sent in previous SAT scores and then sends the December ones does that file become “active” again should they have been put in a “pile” of rejected students?

What if you indicate on the application that you will be taking the SAT score in January? Does the college keep it aside until after the scores come in?

That was a question that our daughter sent admissions regarding her Dec score. She did not have it marked on her application that she would be taking it in Dec(decided on a whim that it might be “fun” to see how she did since she took it last Jan/Mar and has already been admitted to other schools, i.e. less pressure).
The answer she got back was go ahead and send the other scores in early Dec. and then send the Dec. right when they are posted on Dec. 22.

I have the same questions as powerbomb and mw4hsk. I sent my past scores, but I’ve indicated on my application that I intend to take the SAT again in January. Does it mean my application won’t be looked at until February? Or will they look at it and consider it again when I send them?

(I think that with my current scores, I still have a reasonable chance of being accepted. The reason I’m taking the SAT again is because I would like to be more competitive to see if, potentially, I can be in the running for a Jefferson scholarship. Will I still be considered with the later scores, if they’re higher?)

There was another thread about this.

The January scores don’t arrive until mid-February. They probably won’t be in the file during the first few rounds of reading, but they will be there for the final rounds. This is why we don’t recommend the January test date.

Highjacking the thread, sorry…

Why doesn’t UVa accept rushed scores? Last night, I added UVa to a list of schools to where I was sending my scores, and for good measure I paid the extra money to rush them; do I seriously have to go back and pay to mail the scores again?

Because rushed scores aren’t faster. They’re slower and more expensive.

Now, I have asked students to tell me how they are told the rushed scores are delivered, but in the past, rushed scores were sent BY MAIL, each in one envelope. Meanwhile, regular scores are sent electronically. At this time of year, we have 10-15 bins of mail stacked up, waiting to get processed. The score that comes electronically will get into the system before someone opens that paper envelope.

IF ETS changed how rushed scores are delivered and is sending them electronically, our policy might change. As of last year, the rushed scores were coming in the mail.
