Anyone else doing this?

starting in january?

Yea i just got accepted. Does anyone know what the story is with it? What are we supposed to do for a semester?

Congrats January Kids!

I know it all seems really overwhelming and scary right now, but I promise you everything will work out great. As January Students (aka J.Progs) you really are part of an amazing group on campus. Everyone agrees that admissions really waits to bring the coolest kids on as a "breath of fresh air" in the Spring. I promise you, if you come to Wash U as a J.prog you will have friends, you will do well in school, and you will fit in great once you get to campus. Believe me, once you actually start - you'll be really glad you had the semester to do whatever you want. You have a lot of options to keep you involved with school during Fall semester if that's what you want - but you also have the opportunity to study abroad, travel, or do any of a million amazing things. I'm sure right now you have some questions and concerns which are perfectly natural, and there are people to help. I am a January student of this year (I just started full time this semester) and it's worked out great for me. I'm also a part of your year's Peer Advisors which is a group of 7 January Students who are here to answer any and all questions you or your parents may have. One of us should be calling/emailing you in the next few days, but if you have any questions before that - please feel free to email me at acburman at wustl dot edu. Congrats again - if you are a J.Prog you must be pretty amazing!

wow that makes me feel alot better.
I was kinda worried about meeting people but then i saw the 5 week summer program.
Im super excited tho

Yea that is reassuring sarasvati. What'd you do first semester?

Just to add to saravati said, i am not a J Prog studnet BUT I did do the 5 week summer program and it was amazing.

I did do FSAP and absolutley loved it. It definatley made my JProg experience and I suggest it more than anything because it will help you make loads of friends both inside and outside the program. I'm a bit biased because I will be a program assistant (kind of like a counselor) this summer - but I can promise it's going to be amazing.

Over my fall I interned at the Women's Resource Center at the University of Utah (where I live) and I worked. I also did the fall class, which was great because it really allows you to see your FSAP friends that are regular admits, your JProg friends from FSAP, meet the JProgs that didnt do FSAP and see what campus is like when it's lively. No matter what, I suggest very strongly that you do at least one of those programs.

As for what you can do over fall you have a million options - I know kids that studied abroad, kids that backpacked across Europe and South America, kids that took a class at home, worked, interned at art museums, and Senator's offices. Also, we're going to find a way for the career center here to help you out finding interesting things in your area. I know it seems kind of frustrating at first, but especially if you do FSAP - the break from academics is going to feel really nice.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

wow this school is truly a joke, all they care about is their dam ranking

transfer admission for wash U is absolutely a joke, they take everyone...they may tell u they accept only 30 percent, but some of the transfer students they take are absolute jokes

basically....it may be hard to get into Wash U through arts/sciences, but if u apply ED, apply to the business/engineering/art schools, ur a lock if u have decent scores

relevancy?

yea i was sorta wondering that myself...............

Actually, the FSAP (Summer Program) at WashU is mandatory for people accepted through the January Admission program. I'm going to be going to this myself, and anybody else going is welcome to drop me a message.

Bball87, not only is this the wrong thread, but you've picked the wrong ears. This is not a place to flame.

Later, hope to see you all!

i got into the January Program as well. As of now, WashU is my top choice (and has been for the past year). I loveddd it when I spent 5 weeks there at this summer scholar's program for high school students. I actually got to know some FSAP people last year, and i heard how awesome it was, so i really want to attend that!!

but i have a quick question. how useful was the fall class for you? because it is quite expensive for me to fly in from outside the country for four weeks, but i think it'd be a great way to meet new friends there as well.

and do you by any chance know if any of the JProg students attended a study abroad in France? I am looking into studying in France during the fall, and I want to find a good program for that. My parents won't let me go to WashU unless I find something for the fall first, so i'm researchign like mad these days!! thanks!

I think the fall class worked out well for everyone who did it. It presents a very different opportunity than FSAP does. As for flying, if you are part of the program, they subsidize your flights. So, if they will allow you to do the program from outside the country you will be paying the same as someone flying from a few states away.

If you are studying abroad though, and that is why you will be out of the country - they won't fly you back and forth for the class. If you are doing FSAP and want to go away to France, you should be fine though. You don't need to do both programs- technically you don't need to do either, one is just strongly suggested. I'm almost positive, but I will check tonight at my peer advisor meeting, but I don't think FSAP is mandatory for everyone. Certain J.prog acceptances may have conditions applied such as taking a certain class over the fall, or going to FSAP but if you have other plans or the timing doesnt work out - I'm sure you can discuss things with the ArtSci office.

As for France, I know one Jprog who went there over her fall, she studied in Cannes, I think. If you would like, I can send you her contacts so you can get more info.

sarasvati, I just got my WashU January Program letter today (I learned I was accepted on Monday from Mr. Frappier) and it says that the summer program is mandatory for J.Prog acceptees.

hmmmmmm. i guess the peer advisors will talk about that tonight then, thanks for letting me know and i look forward to seeing you/meeting you/getting to know you this summer!

Interesting... i think the website says that the summer program is strongly encouraged. Heres the link:
http://aisweb.wustl.edu/admissions/home.nsf/pages/january

So WashU flies you in every weekend of the Fall course, even if you are abroad?

Click here for image of part of my letter.

Just so you all know I'm not crazy, haha. Apparently some people got blue papers and some people got pink papers with their letter. Pink paper people need to take the course and blue paper people don't have to. Either way I think it's a good idea to take the course, since you won't be as far behind.

Hope to see you there.

i still havent gotten my actual letter in the mail yet
but on my online one it says they encourage me to take FSAP

thanks so much for answering all my questions! yes please, could you give me the contact number of your friend who studied abroad in Cannes over fall last year? My parents are quite relunctant to send me to France alone for 3 months, but going to a program where a fellow JProg went to will help! :)

thanks!
