Japanese and kanji.

I'd like to have this test on my app next year as my major is going to be Japanese, but after the 2 years I've taken the language, I haven't learned many kanji. Are they essential here? Is there a list of the ones I need to know? And if I'm applying early action, the score wouldn't make it in time right?

October and possibly November scores will make it in time. You need to know 1st and 2nd grade level Kanji for the questions based on reading a passage.

What are 1st and 2nd grade level kanji? Thanks :P

Personally, I find this http://www.us-japan.org/dc/pdf/2012/2012%20NATIONAL%20JAPAN%20BOWL%20Administrative%20Guide.pdf</a> to be a good summary of kanji. In the second half of the document, there is a kanji section. I would recommend learning to read combinations of listed kanji (Leve II, III, and IV).

SAT Japanese is the easiest compared to the AP and JLPT tests. It does probably require you knowing around 200 kanji, which in High schools are taught by the third or fourth year.

Look at the practice questions on the CollegeBoard site; its the speaking/listening part that kills most, but reading is difficult for others with kanji.
