Japanese

hi,
i was wondering if i was qualified to take elementary japanese 1. I can speak fluently but ive lost the ability to read and write kanji and can only read katakana and hiragana with some struggle...it says that the class isnt open to students who have learned enough to qualify for a more advanced course. I dont qualify for a more advacned class if i cant read and write correct?

Also elementary japanese only has around 3 spots left. if by the time i sign up there are no more spots, do i jus have to wait until next year when japanese 1 is available again since japanese 2 is only available during winter and so on?

Julian,

A friend of mine, because she couldn't read or write, started with Japanese 1 as well.

I do not recommend that you wait a year for 1 again. If you can't get a seat, go to a class and beg for a seat. /beg FTW!

がんばれ!

Hey UCLAri...why don't you recommend taking language your second year?

Simple. If you find you really enjoy it and want to do something silly like major in it, you'll have to take a summer's intensive course (which blows). If you start your first year, you have much more flexibility.

yeah i kinda want to start early because i plan to study abroad

In Japan, or what?

Based on what I've read on the internet, your using this means you're playing way too many videogames. FTW! You're in LA go do stuff or something! Eat french fries, perhaps?

Actually, UCLAri is in La Jolla.

Actually, he's in the valley!

I'm running back and forth a lot...you're both right.

UCLAri, I'm sorry, but that is not acceptable. This is cc, and only one of us can be right.

hey julian ... what discussion section are you taking for elementary japanese? the TBA one?

does anyone know when TBA'd classes are usually figured out?

Eventually. :p

i still havent signed up...my orientation session is 109 so im hoping they open more slots

since i probably wont get into jap 1, im thinking about just going straight to jap 2 during winter. i think i can pass out as long as there isnt much kanji on the test. do i jus sign up for the placement test that takes place on september 29? or the one at orientation?

also how much kanji is covered in jap 1? if its alot, im pretty much screwed.

apparently theres no jap placement exam at orientation... so how would i know which jap class to sign up for when the test date is way after orientation and is basically in the first week of school?

I believe you show up to your desired section. The professor will give you a PTE number(?). Just log into URSA and yadda yadda yadda.

Julian,

J1 covers around 100 kanji or so. Basic stuff like:

一、二、三、行く、来る、出る、入る、見る、食べる、教える、etc.

You should be fine. If not, just review about the first 100 joyo kanji.

cool thanks.

what class do i sign up for right now tho?

Well, if you have previous history with the language and think you'll place into J1, none...

If not, just get yourself an easy A!
