jas0n's Official UCI Q&A Thread

oh, i didn't mean to add the ?? haha. do you think 3 classes are too few for my first quarter?

Zairair: Yeah i just checked my course catalog and you do have a point. The only reason why I felt i could skip 93 and/or 94 was because during academic advising for Bio Sci Majors only, the counselor specifically mentioned skipping 93 but it was not really recommended, and in the New Student Handbook the school of Biological Sciences gave us, it says:
"*Note: Beginning Fall 2006, the School of Biological Sciences will allow students who have earned a 5, the option of waving Bio 93 and/or Bio 94. Please see a Bio Sci counselor for more information"

It seems odd that there are conflicting reports but either way I'm planning on keeping Bio 93 so it won't affect me for now.

Shoefactory: I only took two years of language in HS and i don't plan on ever using that language nor do I have the patience for it as stupid as that sounds. As much as i will hate 8AM lectures EVERYDAY of the week I'll study a language that may eventually be useful to me and maybe just maybe i may even like it.

I thought I could get away from taking H2LA, so from what you're saying even it its not required by the school of Bio Sci i still have take it? So its not like Chem 1A where LA is optional for Bio majors...

Oh and one more thing i just realized that if i add labs and everything I'm looking at 19/20 units, would taking Spanish sophomore year be a better idea?

Thanks anyway

zairair is wrong.

you can skip bio 93 and 94 if you've gotten a 5. Plan to skip 94. I have tons of friends who have done that.

Okay, I guess you need to fulfill the requirement ai. 19/20 is a lot but if you are diligent you can handle it. You can also take spanish during summer school or at CC if you want.

kdbar: yes.

i have a question about buying textbooks. if there are multiple editions of a certain textbook, do u normally buy the newer edition?

I didn't really want to take that many units my first quarter but CHP and all :/

I signed up for Tobias, is Penner that much better?

Shoefactory: "My friends did it" doesn't cut it for evidence.

http://www.editor.uci.edu/08-09/intro/intro.11a.pdf

2008-09 UCI Catalogue: Biological Sciences

"Prerequisites listed for Core courses are rigorously enforced."

I would ask a counselor before attempting to skip any course. You don't want to enter fall of your sophomore year and then get rejected from bio 97 because you didn't take 94. And for the record, I'm not wrong just ill informed if anything because this is what I know =P. Btw did you go to socal arml csulb?... Alex? You don't know me... Yea that's kinda creepy, you don't have to answer.

Chickenboi: i'd just wait til i go to class and ask the instructor. Getting the old edition of the chem h2a book saved me about 100 bucks at least.
Reddogg: yeah, sign up for penner if there's still space to switch.
Zairair: yeah i went to socal arml, who are you? Hit me up on facebook or something. Anyways, my friends DID skip. I skipped without taking either 93 or 94 and i didn't even take the AP test. My friends and I have already signed up for next years 97 class. Ai you should check with your counselor anyways w/e.

edit: well since they LET you waive the class from it, it doesn't show in the first link because normally, if you AP tested out of a class, you aren't allowed to take it for a grade. But you are still allowed to if you get a 5 on bio, even if you have the option to waive it.

Sorry sorry sorry I hate being wrong sorry. I have this a disorder where I have to be right yada yada yada will argue till the end of the earth even though its wrong I'll go somewhere else right now.

if my three classes (writing 39b, physics 7a, math2a) are too few, what else would you recommend i sign up for?
p.s. i'm an engineering major =)

Although I love taking four classes at all times to keep me busy and make my money worth it, I say that's a good amount of classes for your first quarter. Those are three heavy courses (except for maybe math 2a).

If you already know some physics and calculus, though, you might be able to pick up a fourth class with no problems. Look up a GE that will satisfy the social and behavioral sciences section since it holds the easiest courses.

I personally recommend a small courseload for just your first quarter to get a feel for everything and have time to explore the campus. I wish I did it :.

Another question, how calculus intensive is honors chemistry H2A and/or the labs and what would be an adequate level(like how advanced does the calculus get?) to get a decent grade in the class?

Calculus is not needed at all in H2A.

Though one of my teachers did assign a calculus based homework question in H2B (which tripped people up, cept for me ofc), tests will have nothing like this.

So in conclusion, you don't need any calculus though a few derivations in class might be done with calculus, but still you won't need to do any of that.

hi,
i was wondering whats the name of the textbook for chem 1a....
thanks in advance

The author for last years book was Raymond Chang

Chemistry Information Center:

I think it was that one. But it might have changed for this year. Check the uci coursebooks site when it updates with the fall books.

i think u can check the uci bookstore online to see what books u need

Is HumCore really that difficult? How is that class compared to Writing 39?

Do you recommend to have the financial aid and scholarship money be deposited in my Checking OR Saving Account?

Humcore is a LOT hard than writing 39. There are actual book readings and essays to write about them. Also, it's an 8 unit course which means intensive writing. Writing 39B only makes you read essays where you write essays relating to them. Writing 39C is a research oriented class (Humcore has a unit on this also). You basically get a topic, read a lot of articles, and write essays about it.

Stegggi:

Put it in your checking account. Saving accounts usually only allow a certain amount of withdrawals a month. That could cause some problems when dealing with a large sum of money. I can't imagine you getting that much interest off finaid and scholarship money either.

How/When/Where do you change your major? When do you sign up for classes?

I am a Freshman and my orientation is on Wed. Should i already know what classes i should take????

They'll tell you about how to switch major.

You don't need to KNOW but it's nice to have a rough idea.
