Jason Robert Brown

I am a current high school senior hoping to major in musical theater next year. I attended a program at BoCo two years ago, and I remember Patty Thom (head of voice and opera dept.) saying that some schools prohibit the use of Jason Robert Brown songs during auditions due to the difficultly of the accompaniment. I know that BoCo (my first choice) does not restrict JRB, because they require the accompaniment on a CD.

Does anyone know which schools do not allow JRB?

What is your list of schools? It might be helpful for people to respond if they knew where you plan to audition :)

It is not so much a question of "allow" as it is what is recomended. If a song is difficult to accompany, therefore affecting the smoothness of your performance, why do it? You never know, you could get a great accompainist who can do practically anything or maybe one not so good and it could be a disaster. The JRB thing along with Sondheim are generally stayed away from for these very reasons. While you want to show your stuff and you may sing one of these songs really, really well, do you want to risk it? All of these schools have audition requirements posted on their websites. And if they do not specifically state no JRB and you have your accompainament on a CD then why not! Just make sure your CD will play on any machine or bring your own. Good Luck!

shinexxon - Do you know how to do a search on this board? There are many posts about using JRB's material - not sure if you will find schools by name but there is a lot of information about this topic.

Go to the main Musical Theatre page and under the "Welcome" box in the upper right of the page you will see "Search this Forum" - type in Jason Robert Brown and click on "Show Posts" - there are quite a few there.

Good luck!
