Java programming class - online options and need advice on whether it's doable.

Hi,
My junior schedule got into in an issue - was planning to do AP Computer Science A. GC earlier approved it tentatively but now sent me an email saying that I need a prerequisite in Java. The earlier permission was based on an online course I did last year - the online course was informal or non-credit one. Based on the project I did, she earlier said I will be ok - but seems I need a formal credit (even if it’s online). Any advice on where I can take a formal/approved course in Java programming. Our state has an online high school but there is no java course there - checked CTY where they do have a couple courses but they costs big bucks. Any other suggestions?
PS: I already did a course so the course need not be advanced, want to take it over summer to complete the formal prereq requirement. TIA.

Any help in finding an online Java programming class - thanks.

all are free!

and i think it should be doable, but not to a preferable extent. try to find a syllabus somewhere online and go by it. you should also try to find weekend or after school classes at your local community college for java, or find a program close by.

@sputniik, Free, but would any of them provide @hs2020kid the official credit he seems to need?

@chezcurie oh oof

in that case:

  • see if local community colleges have credit-offering after school or weekend java classes
  • look for java summer programs/camps that offer credit
  • talk to your guidance counselor and ask them for other places or websites to go to for java class credit

thanks for the suggestions. our school district has some restrictions in terms of what classes they accept for credit: if its online, it has to be “for credit” with appropriate syllabus/length-of-course and some sort of grading (projects/tests/exercises etc.) to show that I actually completed the course. None of the local community colleges offers this as a summer course but I may be able to find in other local universities - let’s see.

Ask your GC if they have recommendations for online options.

@hs2020kid
i know UC Berkeley has online java classes that’s for 2 semesters and it’s available for credit! it’s a bit pricy tho… almost $800…
i’ll give you the link anyway:

@sputniik @bopper - thanks for the comments and link - that does seem a bit expensive. Also, my GC was really helpful :slight_smile: - I told her about the coursera courses and she got them evaluated and approved. Its much cheaper and have exercises and all and we get credit for a small fee. So I am all set - thanks all.

Never be scared to learn something new with the possibility of failing. Learning is fixing from your mistakes. With that said, go into it with all your passion and you will do great. BTW, I’m doing AP Comp Sci too so the fear of uncertainty stretches amongst us.

Make sure to take the course seriously…set yourself up a time to do it and follow through.
