You will be hard-pressed to find a school rated as high as Case that is as generous with merit aid. In fact, I want to know them. Most schools of this quality have zero merit aid. Case gives merit money to 3 or 4 times more students than CMU does as a percentage of applicants. And very few schools ever give out more than $10,000 per year.

To complain about "only" getting $14,400/yr is crazy. I'm saying this as someone who applied RD with a 1390 who would be thrilled with 14 grand. Thats huge! Yeah I understand that 10 more points might be worth even more.

And all schools have deadlines. Everyone understands this.

Okay first of all. Case is a great school but its not that reputable from an admissions stand point. Its a good school but RPI is as good or better and they give just as good merit.

CMU is 100 times better than Case.

The SAT criteria they are using is wrong, because several students who are number one out of like 700 students are getting presidential's (one person was number one in class and had a 1460 sat hundreds of community service), and don't qualify for the award.

And all schools have deadlines. Yes I know this, but no where did they mention that they would not accept SAT scores after october. Unless one physically called them, you couldn't have found this out.

This defeats the whole purpose of taking it this late in the first place.

and second of all you forget that case is 37k (probably will be 40k this year). You want to pay 30k for a college? I don't think so.

I agree with T990. I was absolutely ecstatic when I found out that I had received the Provost scholarship worth $14,400! :) I had a 1380 SAT, and I am proud of my scholarship. Case has earned its great reputation, and, contrary to what some people believe, it is VERY generous in giving out financial aid and merit-based awards. Case is the number one private school in Ohio when it comes to giving out money. When the state school in Ohio is $16,000/yr (Ohio State Univeristy), it doesn't seem that bad to put $22,000/yr ($37,000 total-$14000 scholarship) into a great private school eduction.

There are probably some programs at RPI that are better than Case's, but there are certainly programs at Case that are not offered by RPI. For merit aid, the 2005 Kaplan book is quite reliable; this is what it says:

RPI FT Undergrads receiving non-Need scholarships: 14%
RPI average amount per student: $10,789
Tuition, room & board: $37,700

Case FT Undergrads receiving non-Need scholarships: 34%
Case average amount per student: $12,352
Tuition, room & board: $35,000

You will be very hard pressed to find merit aid like Case has.

I hate the SAT too and don't like the way scores are used, but what it is is what it is.

37K - 14K is not 30 grand either. If you think thats a bad deal for CWRU, consider that UConn for an out-of-stater would cost almost 30 grand a year. I think Case offers a great option myself & I doubt it will remain this good of a deal into the future.

Well RPI is just as expensive and CMU is even more expensive jawaad...
Also I personally think Case is much much better than RPI. RPI is very limited in learning to its engineering schools. The other parts of the school are horrible. At Case you will get a much more well rounded education. Also don't case CMU is 100 times better because it is not. I think they are both comparable to each other...

I have the Presidential scholarship, but i am not sure why I applied to CWRU anymore. Is that terrible? I do not want to study engineering. But maybe something related to finance or business. All of my friends say go to CWRU for engg. only.

alice - CWRU has a wonderful business program as well as many things that are not engineering. Don't forget just because you originally intended to do engineering Case has a one door open admission policy so technically you can get into any program they offer. The best thing to do is go to one of the Experience Case days and get a feel for the college. I would suggest doing that with any other college you are interested in going to after all you have the end of April to do this. Don't listen to your friends (I know that is hard), but you will be attending the school not your friends. Good luck in your decision:)

Thanks mominsearch. It's just so hard, all my friends are getting in top-tier schools, and i probably will too, but how do you choose between price and name. (you don't have to answer that, I know it's on many threads).

alice - Case is a top-tier school (ranked I believe 38 in top 50 universities). That's pretty darn good if you consider that there are thousands of colleges in the US. Your decision may come down to financing unfortunately because so many of the top top universities don't give out much merit or grant monies. However, if your parents can pay then I guess you won't have to make that choice:)

Remember, you are not defined by the college you attend, your career (eventually), your test scores or your future income. At the end of the day if you are happy with who you are and what you are doing that is true success. I cannot tell you how many people I know that lived at home, drove a junker and attended a state school working full time to boot. They are successful, happy, have great careers, and even a little spending money. Many of them even went back and got their masters and PhDs. They had very little loans to pay back and all of them would do it again.

Remember too, that there are many many students who didn't get accepted to Case that would have killed to get in - let alone get a good scholarship especially this year if there really were 7700 applicants.

Anyways, I'll get off my soapbox. Have a great weekend and good luck with your decisions.

Chelsea 2005, did you visit both Case and OSU? I liked OSU MUCH more than Case when I visited. Case is in the middle of the ghetto of Cleveland, and as the tour guide pointed out himself, some of the security call boxes are out of order. It was simple to set up a meeting at OSU with a Japanese professor as it was on the same online form as the regular college visit form. OSU has a beautiful campus even while it was being renovated. The dorms are worse at Case than at OSU; there is only ONE MICROWAVE PER FLOOR at Case, and I am a huge fan of the microwave. All rooms at OSU come with a microwave and mini-fridge. Also, I got to see a classroom and all of the important buildings at OSU during off-season; most of the important buildings at Case were CLOSED and even the tour guide did not know it until he tried opening the doors. Case offered me a nice scholarship and it is a great price for a top private university, but I think OSU has more to offer me; I felt like I fit in there.

parasitelin,
Yes, I have visited both campuses multiple times. I've been to Case twice (going again in a couple weeks) and OSU three or four times. I am kind of torn between Case and OSU. I really like both schools, but Case is my top choice. Money is a big factor, though. I have a scholarship, but it still doesn't make Case a cheap as OSU. One thing to consider is distance. I am about 1/2 hr away from OSU and 3 1/2 hrs away from Case. If I go to OSU I will be very close to my family. This has both its advantages and disadvantages. Another factor I'm considering is cheerleading; at Case I can be a cheerleader. OSU is too competitive for me to make the squad. I just really like what Case has to offer. By the way, that's funny that you found OSU dorms nicer than Case's. For me it was the exact opposite! :) I was really turned off by the "towers" at OSU. I just think that Case has more educational opportunities for me. I come from a small, Catholic high school and I like the close interaction I have with my teachers. I kind of want that in a college, and I think Case can make that happen.

Parasitelin,
I forgot to ask you something. Did you happen to compete in the Maximus Scholarship Competition for OSU? If you did, have you heard back from them? Results are supposed to be sent sometime in March and I haven't heard anything. Thanks.

No, I don't think I qualify because of my odd situation... I'm out of state but qualify for instate because of my father worked in Cleveland for a few months and then worked in Boston again due to another promotion.

To who ever asked if it is worth it to go just for the money; almost all of our schools top students went to case because they couldnt refuse the financial aid they were offered.

Do you know whether Case is very specific about the requirements for the three scholarships listed above? I have a 1390, and I would feel a bit uneasy if I didn't win the Presidential scholarship just because I was happy with that score. Should I retest?
