Jazz Program

S2 is considering applying and is wondering what the opportunities are for playing in a Jazz Ensemble at the College? He plays drums in one of the top HS Jazz Bands in the country, which this year has played at Lincoln Center in NY and toured France and Italy performing at town squares and various Jazz festivals. Also, we noticed that the posted GPAs for W&M appear to be weighted, does the admissions office recalculate GPAs, and if so how is it done?

The W&M music department is fairly small, but there is a jazz ensemble (big band style) that meets tuesday/thursday (along with a Wind Symphony (concert band) that meets MWF). If the W&M Jazz Ensemble isn’t what the kid wants, then he is welcome to start his own… he could get a combo together, or even a second jazz band. There is another student run jazz ensemble also, but the kid who started that one is graduating next year, and I don’t know if it will stay around.

There are a lot of VERY talented musicians at W&M, but for the most part, music is not their focus in college.

Harris Simon has a jazz combo: [William & Mary - Directory Page Title](Harris Simon | Music | Arts & Sciences | William & Mary)

Thanks! We will contact the Mr. Simon.
