I’m currently a high school student who plays french horn in orchestra and wind ensemble, and piano in the jazz band. I want to major in music education, but I don’t want to study french horn in college. Instead I would much rather study jazz piano. The only problem is I can’t play classical piano, I only know how to play jazz piano. Would there be some way to do a dual degree, or do some colleges let you major in music education while studying a jazz instrument? Thank you for your advice!
My son is a performance/ music ed major at Eastman. Jazz majors are also allowed to be a part of the music ed program. He knows several.
Are they double majoring? Or just part of some of the non-jazz ensembles? Thank you so much for your response! Very reassuring!
They double major. If you go to Eastman you are in a performance based conservatory.
University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theatre and Dance specifically has a degree program called “Bachelor of Fine Arts in Jazz Studies with Teacher Certification”

Thanks! I’ll check that link out
I know that Temple offers a dual music education/jazz piano concentration program. I don’t know if it fits what you’re looking for, but I would check it out!
Eastman is a wonderful school but the Jazz audition has a classical component and the program also requires more classical study than other jazz programs, in our experience.
