As most JBSs are 5th-9th, just wondering if most apply to secondary schools as 10th graders or repeat 9th. Also wondering if when JBS show their matriculation schools, are they only showing the 9th grade class? I’m assuming some kids leave after 8th. Do they add those in as well? To they discourage kids from leaving after 8th?
Most JBS students apply for 10th but some kids do apply to SS for 9th ( or say they’re open for both 9th or 10th ) - for a variety of reasons.
Most ( if not all ) JBSs do post their matriculation lists on their website. The SS Placement Office will also furnish you with a copy or answer any questions . JBS matriculation lists reflect the graduating class and the graduating class only . It does not include kids who did not graduate with the class. An 8th grade JBS student also loses their alum status if they leave before 9th… so many don’t leave but a few do- mostly for financial reasons. Some kids/families also leave for Four Year Status at a SS, as well.
JBSs don’t discourage kids/families from leaving after 8th, but I’ve known a few heartbroken/ disappointed kids who did for whatever reason. I’ve known parents who went in thinking that their kid would leave JBS after 8th but ended up staying because they didn’t realize what a special experience it would be. Most parents ( including myself ) had to be dragged out of there.
FWIW- My sons are both in college now but their closest most dearest friends are all fellow JBS alums. It’s a super tight knit group. I’m a JBS alum and I’m still in touch with many of my old classmates, too. We all agree that it was the best BS experience of all and the one we’ll treasure most.
My son currently attends a JBS, this will be his second and last year. He is in ninth grade. For obvious reasons it did not make sense for him to attend for just one year and then leave. He will be transitioning to 10th grade at a secondary school next year, so we are at the beginning of the admission process now. From my observations, it does not appear that they encourage or discourage parents from applying to secondary schools for ninth grade entry. However, I have noticed that there are always a few that will leave in 8th grade which is why they may have more spots available for incoming 7th and 8th-grade students and sometimes 9th-grade students.
