Just had my first interview today and they said they’d get back to me in 7-10 days

Sigh, I regret not trying for this Jefferson’s scholar.

It’s not something you “try” for…you have to be nominated for it.

Alternate for Philadelphia region Basically, alternate’s names are submitted to the Scholars committee and they select some (not sure how many) to come to the weekend. So not first, but when only one goes out of a 50 person region, #2’s not looking too bad ;)

If you’re your high school’s Jefferson nominee, but don’t make it past the application stage, what are your chances of admission to the university. (High school in VA)

The same as everyone else’s. To be nominated means you have what UVa may be looking for as they review their applications. With that said it does not mean you are in or not in. Remember, the Jefferson Foundation is not associated with UVa admissions, they are a separate organization. So do not worry about it and enjoy the next couple of months until decisions for most colleges come out. Enjoy your senior year!

I just got a call informing me that I am invited to the Scholars weekend!!! :D

Congrats! Still waiting to hear my result…

Title says it all. I think that the last NYC interviews were last Thursday (1/26), so a decision has likely been made. Just wondering?

Thanks!

Can I ask what the credentials were for those that were extended invite to weekend at UVA? Daughter just got letter for regional and we have no idea about this process. UVA is her first choice, but cannot afford without $$. We live in Georgia.

@momoffivekids The credentials of Jefferson Scholars in general are usually pretty high GPA’s, good standardized test scores and very high leadership abilities/experiences. As far as who gets to the Finalist weekend, it’s less about specific credentials than it is about the whole package together, especially performance in the Interviews. When is your daughter’s interview scheduled?

@Studentt15 her interview is scheduled for next Saturday. She has in my opinion some more than ordinary leadership experience and ability. She has achieved her Gold Award in Girl Scouting which is actually more unusual than achieve Eagle rank in scouts. She teaches Greek and Latin in a free club after school to younger students and has done so for three years. She works both during the school year and full time in the summer and has excelled in three languages up to and including AP in Spanish, Latin and Greek. She has the usual high GPA, AP’s and test scores (Which everyone does) the unique factor is the languages and the Classics Club along with her Gold Award project…what do you think? She is wondering what they ask at the interview?
@momoffivekids
That is definitely good leadership experience and I’m sure it will play a part in her interview.
This is what my interview was like:
You sit in a room with between 3-8 interviewers who are often alumni of the university and/or the Jefferson Scholarship Foundation. They briefly introduce themselves and then interview you for approximately 30 minutes.
They ask a lot of questions about your application, essays, recommendations, extracurriculars and classes. They ask personal questions, including challenges in your life, greatest weakness and your definition of/experience with Scholarship, Leadership and Citizenship. They may ask a question or two about current events or politics. That’s about it.
Good luck!
Message me if you have any more questions.
@Studentt15 thank you! She got accepted EA yesterday and her interview is as we speak…We are hoping for the best, but its just an honor to be the nominee.
Wondering if anyone else got surprisingly quick response times on their interviews? I interviewed with the regional committee and they said they were interviewing about 20 people for one spot, and that it’d take about two weeks for them to get back to me…I was rejected less than 24 hours later haha…Since then I’ve been accepted to the actual University OOS, (which I’m thrilled about!!!), but I was wondering if anyone else had a similarly rapid rejection…or maybe I’m just really bad at interviews lol
@momoffivekids, how was your daughters interview yesterday. My daughters interview is this Friday.
She said it went very well. It was about 40 minutes long and there were five panelists. She said it felt like they just wanted to get to know you better than the resume they have in front of them. She suspects that the next round (if she makes it) might be a bit more challenging. Good luck to your daughter! Where are you from?
@momoffivekids, thanks for the info. We are from northern Virginia.
@LoudounMom I hope the interview went well for your college bound student too. My husband is a UVA grad, grew up in NOVA in Alexandria.
@soccerlover17 I am sorry…can I ask what part of the country you are from? We have not heard and are dying over here!
