Jefferson Scholarship Chances

My school is asking us to which schools we want to be nominated for scholarships, and I am wondering if I am the type of student who is competitive for the Jefferson and if I am well rounded enough. Thanks in advance for the input.

Sure, you're competitive. I had similar numbers and was turned down. It's definitely a crapshoot and has a lot to do with how well you click with the people in your interview - if you get one.

Bingo.

See the Jefferson Scholars Foundation website for more info.

Thanks. Any more thoughts?

Is that scholarship only for virginia residents?

Check out the Jefferson Scholars Foundation website for all the info.

Don't put young Republicans on your application. Admission people are predominantly liberal.

At UVA or across the entire country? Also, do you have any sources or personal experiences to back up your assertion?

Actually, that's not true. Many former Jeff Scholars help to interview and choose each new class of Jeff Scholars, and the Jeffs are as varied in the political spectrum as the rest of the UVa student body. It doesn't matter what you believe in. What's more important is your ability to defend your beliefs in a concise and convincing way. So, it's fine to put Young Republicans in your application, but be prepared to answer why you're a member.

hes just making it up. while dean j can speak more on this than i can, the jist i get is that all ec's are essentially jsut treated the same (even varsity sport players) unless the kid is an all-star in his respective activity.

Right, I was just making it up. Believe whatever you want.

Once again, do you have any data or at the very least a personal anecdote to back up your assertion?

Academically you're fine but extracurriculars-wise you barely make the cut. The Jefferson Scholars I know have much stronger ECs. Good job, and good luck--you're in the running--but don't expect the scholarship.

Thanks. Anyone else?

I've addressed this a few times in the past.

I'm a finance major at UVA.

Last year I was looking for an internship and had "College Republicans Exec Board" proudly displayed on my resume. I sent my resume to some employers and a couple weeks later I got a call from a Chicago based hedge-fund. After a brief (and I'm talking ten minutes), phone interview the guy extended me an offer. No series of interviews or anything like that, just a straight offer for the kind of in internship that makes a finance major salivate.

So I accept the offer and start working. I find out after a few days my boss is a big-time Republican. Coincidence? I think not. Would I have gotten the job if it said "College Democrats" on my resume. Based on what I know now about my boss, HELL NO.

The point is: sometimes it can work in your favor, sometimes it will work against you. I'm not going to provide you with statistics that show that admissions boards are mostly liberal. The fact that college educators are predominantly liberal makes that evident. But why risk something as important as WHAT COLLEGE YOU GO TO on the possibility of a jerk reading your app. It's entirely possible (even likely) that the person reading your application will be just as reasonable as "Dean J" is. Then again they might subconsciously dock points. Save the political organizations for lower risk application processes where getting denied doesn't hurt so badly.

Thanks for the reply.

Admissions officers do not control the Jefferson Scholarship. That is done by the Alumni Foundation.

Hedge funds have business risk. If the guy is placing his trust in you because you were in College Republicans I can't see that surviving anytime soon.

Sv3a, you make me laugh. ;)

What kind of ECs do Jefferson scholars have? And what if these opportunities are not available to you at your school or in your community??
