Jefferson's Scholars Nominees

just got the email...phew!!!!

I got the letter notifying me of my interview a couple days ago...but it says that the interview is only 15 minutes long. What's up with that? Is this the only interview before national selection weekend? how much can they learn in 15 minutes? what should I be prepared to talk about? Also, what should I wear? I was thinking some sort of dress shirt and a brooks brothers blazer, but am not sure yet.

Hey cavalier:
In order...

1) Most of the regional interviews are 15 to 20 minutes with breaks for deliberations between candidates. Thats actually about average for a scholarship interview, so don't worry.
2) This is probably the only interview before National Selection Weekend, but some committees will call back 3 or 4 candidates for second interviews if they feel like they need to. If they do second interviews, they are usually a week or two after the first. Generally there is a time lag between the interview and when you hear-- it's a bit of a waiting game. In short- maybe this is it, maybe it isn't.
3) They learn a lot in 15 minutes. It will go by very quickly for you though.
4) Be prepared to talk about anything you wrote in your application; about leadership, citizenship and scholarship; about your interests at UVa; about your career interests; about major current events. And really, be prepared for anything. Go in with an open mind and convince yourself that it is going to be fun and it will be. if they ask you something you don;t know, tell them you don;t know and move on.
5) Dress shirt and blazer are just fine. Business attire is best. Look nice, and remember the attention is on your mind and not your clothes.

Good luck! This is the exciting part!

Thanks for in the info. I have done fairly well in my two previous college interviews; both lasted around two hours. I'll definitely be nervous though...I'd love to be a jscholar but 15 minutes certainly is a short interview!

my interview is next week one evening...I have never been on an interview. It should be interesting. I feel like I would be a competitive candidate(along with everyone else) and my only hope is that I am able to articulate my thoughts well without letting them see my hands shake

are you guys doing the 1st or 2nd interview? I did my first one a few days ago, but my region does a 2nd interview. How do you get notified? By mail or phone?

This is my first interview. I'm in the piedmont region...is anyone else here from VA? WHhich regions? Does anyone know how many jscholars are chosen from VA, how many there are per region, and/or how many nominees there are from VA?

Manchu-
You'll probably be notified by a letter from directly from the foundation. This usually comes several days after the interview, but it can vary.

Cav302,
Typically about 40 nominees from Virginia go to national selection weekend (roughly half), and usually around a third of the Jefferson Scholars are from Virginia (i.e. out-of-state has an advantage once you reach selection weekend).

do you know how many nominees there are from VA?

I'm not sure how many nominees are actually named in the first place, but each high school is entitled to a nomination... so theoretically, hundreds.

I had my interview earlier today and it went very well! I'm hoping for the best, but they told me that they were interviewing 19 people and 1 would get the nod to attend national selection weekend. They also said I'd hear sometime this week...so I'm pretty nervous. If anyone who hasn't interviewed yet has any questions, feel free to ask. Oh, and btw, is anyone here in the piedmont region?

had my interview...was nervous but i think that is the norm...anyway, it went well and the next step is another interview in this area befoe they choose..will find out in about a week if I make it to the next interview

ahhhhh i have mine tomorrow!!!

hey guys I've got a question. I still haven't heard back from the selection committee, even though at my interview I was told that I'd hear back sometime last week. Someone I know from another region who had her interview a day or two after I had mine found out on saturday...so I'm starting to wonder when I'll find out and why it's taking so long. Does anyone have any ideas?

maybe they did not finish all of their interviews yet...there are still some going on in my area(out of state) and not all happening in the same week, you probably were in the first set

Yeah, I haven't heard back either and she said I would hear within a month. I was interviewed on January 3rd, so I should be hearing any day now...

Hey guess what everyone- I just got a letter today... I'm a finalist! I'm so, so, soooo excited!!! Hopefully I'll see some of you at National Selection Weekend!! :)

Congratulations laurenh! We'll definitely see you here in March. Cavalier302, are you from NC? Good luck to everyone-- and don't worry, many committees are still interviewing and deliberating.

Congrats Lauren87. You'll have a great time!

Thanks! I'm absolutely thrilled and shocked!
