people in Jena are saying the nooses that were hung on the tree were for a football game
[/quote]

Two problems with this statement:
1) What makes these people more credible than the media? They have a motive, too--to maintain their reputation.

2) How are nooses used in a football game?

This just seems like a far-fetched excuse to me.

I don't see the point in this whole mess. It seems pretty straightforward to me. Nooses hung on a tree - hate crime? Not a direct crime, but almost certainly a threat; we should do more investigation. Six kids beat up another? Definitely criminal, whether for a "just cause" or not.

It may just be that I'm an ignorant suburban kid who has no idea what the real world of hatred and racism are like (though I'd prefer not to be called one to my face), but I support polkahard. This is being blown way out of proportion.

mj93, yeah. I'm not making any new posts. If I have to, I'll make a new account, or I'll PM the mods and beg them to make my post count always at 1337.

Its obvious most of u aren't african-american. i am so i'll give you my opinion. that kid got what was coming to him. You are failing to mention that the white kids were stating thinking like nig**** die. Thats what a noose means as well. They weren't for a football game. That is crap that they stated in order to avoid getting in trouble. The white kid that got beat up went to a party that night, he obviously wasn't seriously injured. The black students were originally charged with life in prison for attempted murder(2nd degree) The deadly weapon was considered a shoe. Does that sound deadly no. It wasn't even a pointy heel it was a tennis shoe. Yes the six black boys needed to get suspension, but for the same amount of time that the white boy needed to get suspended for. Since when do you get life in prison for a high school fight. Something like this would only happen in a racist little town such as Jena. This is ridiculous, they should all have gotten a week in suspension. This town has to many issues such as the black kid who took the loaded riffle from the white kid got sent to prison for stealing a weapon yet the white kid got suspended for having it. Don't you see something wrong with this. Yes they are kids the white kid lost a fight as simple as that. He got beat up, but deserved it. He went to a party the same night he wasn't about to die so stop exaggerating.
p.s. i wore all black last thursday like everyone supporting jena 6 was suppose to. i go to a 90% white prep school and the 10% of the blacks and about 2.5% of whites who were wearing black like we were asked to did a silent march down the hall ways. Most of the white kids were scared and ran in classrooms(this was not a class period) They were scared because they saw a group of black kids walking down the hallway. This just shows how racist our society still is. If a group of black people get together for a common cause people automatically assumed we wanted to jump them. Keep in mind I live in the north NOT the south.

Basically the town has racial problems-which town doesn't? These kids were no angels though...and prison time should be the response (attempted murder is a bit much though).

And to the above poster:

It has been reported that the school has two standards of justice since white students who attacked a black student were not treated as the black students who attacked a white student. No group of white students attacked a black student at Jena High School. Fights that have occurred have always been handled equally. This was not a fight. This process was taken out of the hands of school officials when the ambulance was called to bring Justin Barker to the hospital for the attack. Both the appearance of the ambulance and Barker’s visit to the emergency room requires an investigation by law enforcement.

wowzerz-"The deadly weapon was considered a shoe. Does that sound deadly no."

It doesn't matter if there was a weapon at all. If you beat somebody with your fist or with anything until that person is unconscious...and continue to beat them afterward....then that could very well be attempted murder. (It really doesn't matter if the kid felt fine 2 hours later...he could have died?)

Also, stop playing the race card. It really is unnecessary. If these people were white or purple w/ pink poka dots, they should still be tried and convicted of attempted murder. (That's if they were actually involved in the beating, I know one of them alleges he was just an observer).

Also, this isn't just a fight, so quit saying it is. Just a fight might result in some bruises and torn clothing, not being kicked unconscious.

The real losers in all of this are the students that go to the school. Now, they have to put up with all these ridiculous distractions.

How can this country ever get over racism, if black society (yes, black society) continues to use it when something goes wrong???

i agree with jerk, dont play the stupid race card. jerk is completey right; every time theres an issue with a black kid, al sharpton and jesse jackson start preaching and all of a sudden the medias covering a racial issue. well its not, which is why the kid is still in jail this weekend.

it was NOT a fight, 6 black kids jumped a white kid, and the white kid almost died. so shutup, i dont care if they are black - they belong in jail. 22 years or 50 years, the court was right.
btw, you live up north, so do i ... the north isnt racist; if i saw a group of black people walking down the hall maybe i'd be nervous too. that doesnt mean im racist, it means im cautious in a stereotypical society. or, maybe i'm just a new yorker used to **** from harlem.

The thread in the parents forum is way more amusing than this, so I'm not going to get too involved with this one, but just one thing:

polkahard, the white kid wasn't in a coma, he was unconscious. there is a HUGE difference.

talkaboutambition: He didn't nearly die by any stretch of the imagination. He got a swollen eye, a concussion, some other scratches and bruises, and was knocked unconscious. He was released from hospital the same day.

^ It's not stupid because there is a difference between a crime, and a deliberate crime against somebody because of their race, religion, or sexuality.

This is coming from the perspective of a black male. While I live in New England, i'm aware that institutionalized racism is alive and kicking in America.

What they are not telling you is that a group of white guys beat up Mychal Bell and the others for attending an all-white party. A fight ensued a few days later, and some black students jumped the white guy in retaliation. Though immature on both sides that is normal high school politics, and whether an all-white collegeconfidential likes it or not, these six young promising black students have the best lawyers in the US, the support of black america, and will get off on every charge. The DA and his racist little town of Jena will suffer hell at the hands of black america for what he is forcing these children to go through.

Is violence wrong? yes. but violence, in this case, was not unprovoked. The white students at Jena high started it - the black kids finished it. Reed Walters is exposing his true racist colors, and that is why he will not get a minute of good sleep for a very long time

wowzerz2010, it's nice to see another aa perspective on these boards. At this point, the DA is fighting a losing battle. The Jena Six have Harvard lawyers, Reed Walters will be hauled in front of Congress to explain himself, and the town of Jena is being exposed for its backwater culture.

Jerk and talkaboutambition, you two really have no authority to speak on that last point you made, seeing that you are not one of us and have apparently never experienced a perspective outside the bubble of white society. How are we supposed to get over racism if white america refuses to look at us as their equals? Until then, let the racial tension continue.
