what are your thoughts of using Jesus as an example on the essay?

What happens if you get a reader who doesn’t believe in Jesus?

depends on how you use Jesus. chances are, though, that the reader will be a Christian of some sort :P

sorry, that wasn’t explained very well. when i said Jesus i was thinking more along the lines of Gospel stories or even parables.

also thoughts on using harry potter?

i dont think using harry potter will sound very legit

For the Harry Potter thing, if you DO use it, maybe make sure you make it humorous.. if you’re trying to use HP as a serious example, you might get a lower score. Just make sure whatever your example is, it actually ties in with your prompt, and you’re not just using it because you decided to in advance.

the bible i’m sure would be fine, but HP… i could see it working if used for emphasis or something.

If the character fits whatever your prompt is and is an apt example for your essay, no harm can come from using them, be they Jesus, Jay Gatsby, or Harry Potter. Examples from literature are highly encouraged (and the Bible is a fairly good source on count of it’s popularity; it’s right up there with Moby Dick and Oliver Twist!).

Comparing the Bible with Moby Dick is not exactly a compliment…

I would stay away from the Bible. I don’t think Harry Potter would make a very strong example…

hannah, isn’t using the Bible just the same as myths/fairytales/history? or is there another reason to stay away?

um.. the essay tests only whether you know how to write or not.. they could care less about WHAT you write, as long as you dont personally offend anyone and write well… you’re good, whether it’s HP or Jesus…

Doesn’t matter. My cousin used pokemon and he got a 12.

invoyable, please, please give details. that is fantastic.

Eh, he showed me his essay score and I really don’t know the details…sorry, it’s hard to believe but really if you incorporate it right anything may just work. He used it humorously, as I’m pretty sure a serious essay with the subject being pokemon would be too difficult for most people…

I used Jesus as an example in my essay. Got a 9. lol.

The Bible is widely regarded as excellent literature, the precursor to all things worth reading. There’s even a cliff notes about it! So yeah, using parables and stuff should be fine, as long as it doesn’t touch any controversial topics, like homosexuality.
