This graphs the percentage of Jewish students (estimated by hillel.org) at the top two tiers of national universities and liberal arts colleges, graphing them against rank of the institution.

Help-The graph doesnt make a lot of sense to me. How do you read it? The ranking is the USN ranking? If so, from what year? I there a way to match up a specific school to each data point?

The ranking is from 2007. I have hard data copies, as well as listings for tier 3 and tier 4 schools (for information purposes) as well.

I am not sure I agree with that. If you look at the base rates of the populations of jews and christians in the general population, you will see that the country is something like less than 1% Jewish. So to have a university that has a population that is well over 50% Jewish makes a significant statement. Brandeis has been known for its high jewish population and strong jewish programs for decades.

[quote]
Brandeis was founded in 1948 as a nonsectarian university under the sponsorship of the American Jewish community to embody its highest ethical and cultural values and to express its gratitude to the United States through the traditional Jewish commitment to education. By being a nonsectarian university that welcomes students, teachers, and staff of every nationality, religion, and political orientation, Brandeis renews the American heritage of cultural diversity, equal access to opportunity, and freedom of expression.

According to the Census, the US is 2.1% Jewish, with higher concentrations in the Northeast, Florida, and California (with some large midwestern Jewish hubs such as Chicago, St. Louis, Cleveland, etc..)

dudedad: most likely because Georgetown is in a huge metropolitan area with a significant population, especially the DC suburbs.
one typically doesnt associate a large jewish population with indiana, or any other places in the midwest for that matter (of course with the exception of the larger cities)

Yeah, I'm surprised Harvard is nearly as high as 30%. Penn and WUSTL are histiorically renowned for having a high Jewish %, but never hear Harvard mentioned in the same vain.

Ashkenazi Jews have made disproportionately large contributions to presumably intellectual pursuits. Though they are about a quarter of a percent of the world's population, they comprise 28 percent of Nobel Prize winners in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, and Economics, and have accounted for more than half of world chess champions.[4] In the United States, Ashkenazi Jews represent less than 2 percent of the population, but have won 40 percent of the Nobel Prizes in science awarded to U.S. citizens, and 25 percent of all Turing Awards.
