That's funny. rodney. My D constantly asks "where do the mediocre Jews go to school?" So far I have not found an answer.

Queen's: the other problem is that while my daughter has "mediocre" stats (at best, that's being optimistic)..she is actually pretty academically minded; can't stand when the kids in her classes goof off, don't do the work, fool around.....really a quandry, but thank goodness we have two years to search.....

Yes rodney. My D is not a slacker either and she is very academic in certain ways. We have less than a year to search. I want everything settled, with at least a safety acceptance by January of next year. D does not need the anxiety.

DunninLA. Unless i misunderstood your point, I can assure you that UCLA does not have the most jews of any single campus in the U.S.

I'm not up on it rodney, but in my day, lots of mediocre Jewish students went to BU. Is that still true?

shaw: BU has gotten much more competitive as of late...although my mediocre and yours may be very different...I'm talking B student; college prep courses.....definitely not Bu stats the past few years.....

I think that rjkofnovi is correct in his statement about UCLA and its place nationally among colleges with high concentrations of Jewish students. In fact, I don't think that UCLA even breaks the Top 10.

rodney, I'm not surprised that BU has gotten a lot more competitive.

quote-
I had no idea Brandeis had such a high jewish enrollment

Brandeis was founded as a place where high achieving jewish students could enroll since they were discriminated against in other similar institutions.

One question about this thread - what prompted the OP to publish these stats? Why is it interesting? Is it sort of like that Christian Colleges thread I saw on cc, so that someone who was looking for more jewish representation w/in the student body can find this, or is there another reason?

Roderick, jewish enrollment is relevant to many Jews for a variety of reasons. It may, but does not have to, have anything to do with religious convictions, which would be the case with christian colleges. The Jewish population was important to me because it gave me a sense of community and continuity in my new endeavors. There were other people who shared common experiences like attending hebrew school as a child, being a part of aza or bbyo (youth groups), visiting Israel, training for a bar/bat mitzvah. It also opened an avenue of self exploration. For example, I double majored in Modern Hebrew and led holiday services. It gave me the opportunity to engage in leadership positions. Being amongst people who grew up like you provides comfort, familiarity, a dating pool, quick friendships and lasting friendships.

This is a very interesting thread. I love all of the imput from everyone!

I find it odd that people are being put on the defensive because they may be seeking a place where there exists a community in which they/their child will be comfortable. Diversity and multiculturalism and all of that is wonderful, but just like any other "group", few people want to be the pioneer or feel isolated.

I cannot tell you how much easier it is for me to deal with things like Rosh Hashannah, Yom Kippur, and Passover because there is a fairly large self-identified Jewish population at my school (though there is a low number of observant Jews).

Additionally, because of our size there have been amazing educational opportunities, both affiliated with Brown through the Judaic Studies department and not, that I've been able to take advantage of at Brown. These opportunities are really important to me and may not have been found other places.

I didn't consciously look for Jewish populations when I applied for college, but I did stop in at the Hillel most of the time just to see what existed. FWIW, I hardly ever go to Hillel now despite being involved in Jewish life in many other ways on campus.

UCLA 26 12
[/quote]

That percentage must have gone down a lot as UCLA became upwards of 50% Asian.

I just found this thread and it is fascinating. I didn't let my daughter apply to southern schools because I just assumed there would be too many there who never met a Jew and would still think they had horns. Actually at an audition in Ohio we ran into just such a person, so yes, while my daughter has to learn that Jews are a minority in this country and often faced with prejudice and stereotypes I would like her to feel comfortable in her college experience.

We live in NY so exposure to all different nationalities is no big deal, she has never had the experience of being the "only one" and college is not the time to have that happen.

amtc, U Florida has had Top 5 Jewish Enrollment (~5000) for awhile now, so... <_<
FSU - ~3000
UGA - ~2000
Emory - 1/3 Jewish
UMiami - ~1500

u get my point lol.

Im glad that most of the jewish people here are not racist, in my middle and high school (southwood middle) alot of kids thought that they were superior because they were jewish (they made 60% percent of the school or around there). Dont get me wrong i had jewish friends but there were a few, i did though go to my friends Bat Mitzvah, including my girl friend’s, but there were a few. I also thought that most colleges were now trying to become more multicultural, for example since african americans make up 12 percent of the population there will be 12 percent of african americans in that colleges.

Well that’s your bad. I can think of several schools (UF, Emory, Tulane, etc) that have huge, huge Jewish populations. It’s no coincidence that every Jew in my family went to Emory.

Yeah im from florida and if you read my schools had many jews, many. People here are not racist, well actually im from miami and there are open minded here, i dont know in the rural areas. the metropolitant areas though (were universities are located) are extremely nice to jews, maybe not zionist but nice.

Yeah, because in the South, we are all just f’ing ■■■■■■■■, right?

Wait jews have horns, i guess we all learn something everyday.
Joking though.
