Jewish Life at Haverford?

I am considering attending Haverford and was wondering what Jewish life was like at this college. Is the student body actively involved in the Jewish Student Union. I see that there is a Hillel and/or Chabad that I believe serves Haverford, Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore, but I'm not sure what the on campus chances for student interaction is like.

I know that there is no formal kosher program at Haverford, but I was also wondering how the vegetarian options were. I'd appreciate you telling me anything else that would be of interest.

There is much (public) information available about Jewish activities on Haverford's website. I'm not sure if this is a symptom of Jewish life, or if this information is just available to current students.

Thanks in advance.

There were students who kept Kosher with the food in the dining center although I don’t know enough details to provide how they did it. I also knew some students who lived in HCA (the apartments) specifically to keep Kosher as well.

I’m not sure what exactly you mean by “Jewish life?” Haverford/Bryn Mawr have a large Jewish student population in terms of percents (I think it’s around 30% or so). In terms of interests and how active students are, I think it will depend on what the subject will be as there will be a diversity of interests. Some won’t be active; period. Others may participate with the organized religious activities and nothing more, some may participate with the JSU and social activities, others may be interested in cultural activities, others in activities related to Israel/middle east and others with something else.

Here’s one student who organized a genetic screening and did a teach in…

FYI, Haverford alumnus (Dr. Michael Kaback) developed the screening test for Tay Sachs back in the 1970s… and was one of the pioneers behind the field of screening for genetic diseases which is so common now.

Monthly Yiddish movie screenings. Jeff TF is a professor in mathematics and a great guy. [Haverford College: Calendar: Yiddish Culture Festival.](http://www.haverford.edu/calendar/details/144222)
