Jewish life at UVA?

Is there any, and if so, what’s it like? I can see the numbers on the hillel website, but I’m wondering if anyone with an inside view can provide any information–especially on what the Jewish dating scene is like!!

Thanks!!

There are 3 main Jewish “scenes” at UVA

  1. Hillel. Pretty liberal, tries its best to accommodate everyone.
  2. Chabad, very traditional, did not feel accepted there as a woman who did not think her place was doing the dishes while the men prayed. BUT. Had some good friends who loved it. One made aliyah and then did Shidduch within 6 months. :O
  3. There is a local synagogue which is reform Friday nights and conservative Saturday mornings. I spent most of my time here since I taught Hebrew. Very welcoming. Many professors are members so UVA friendly and you just take the trolley to get there.

Ok I don’t know what you’ve heard about UVA dating but it’s pretty hookup oriented. I do have a few Hillel friends who are still dating (2010 grad) or married but it’s not the majority. It’s ok, you’re attending UVA to get a BA not MRS. You can work for a few years and then they’ll be done with law school/ med school. (I mean I don’t know how else to respond to your question about dating without bringing that up). Then you meet someone mid or late 20s. Just enjoy college and what is meant to happen will.

Hope that helps let me know if you have more questions.

There is at least one Jewish fraternity at UVa - AEPi. They continue to have the highest average GPA of all fraternities, which is not necessarily something you brag about when talking about parties. They used to be 50% Jewish, but were reconstituted by the National to be 100% Jewish.
