JFK to Yale

What's the best way to get to Yale from JFK International Airport? I'm flying in by myself, and I really have no clue what my different options are. If you could be as specific as possible, it would be greatly appreciated.

Do you mean you’re arriving at JFK airport and need to get to New Haven from there? If so, then there’s a train at Grand Central Station in Manhattan that goes to New Haven.
But I’m just assuming this is what you mean.

You catch the shuttle to Grand Central Station(train station), then you can catch METRO NORTH from grand central station to New Haven… the train station is on Union Ave here in New Haven… there are always cabs waiting outside and can bring you to Yales campus… do you know where you are staying yet? it shouldnt cost too much as New Haven is a small town… maybe a $6 ride…

From JFK-take shuttle to grand central station… where you will hop on metro north…to New Haven… about an hour and 45 minute ride on Metro North…

if you want to ride on Amtrak, you can take a cab from Grand Central to Penn Station and come into New Haven that way… more expensive this way, as Amtrak is pricier… but a much nicer ride with far less stops…

Hope this helps

Thanks NewHavenCTmom! That was really helpful.

I’ve also heard about something called the CT Limo. How does it compare?

My daughter uses go airport shuttle ([Yale University Transportation from Prime Time CT Airport Shuttles now GO Airport Shuttle Connecticut](Yale University Airport Shuttle | Phelps Gate Airport Shuttle | GO Airport Shuttle Connecticut)), the one-way rate is $54 for Yale students, it includes 2 luggage and one carry-on, extra luggage is $5. Ct Limo is $68. Heard mixed reviews of CT Limo (not always on time). My DD never had a problem and the longest she had to wait was 30minutes on Sunday last day of spring break. We try to schedule her flight to arrive at mid-day (12pm-2pm), so she can avoid rush hour in NYC.
The options mentioned above are cheaper, but it can be a hassle if you have luggage.

Agree with Lillymom that taking a train from Grand Central Station is more complicated for a novice traveler than taking either GO or Ct limo. The one way fare on GO is better but the round trip fare on CT limo is less expensive. I have never tried it but some students who want to take a train fly into Newark which I believe has direct Amtrak service up to New Haven.

I am so glad that others were nice enough to share their advice… at least now you have more information, and have more options…Enjoy New Haven!

For reference, flying into Bradley/Hartford is sometimes a very convenient option. The shuttles from there to New Haven are only 45 minutes as opposed to JFK, LGA or Newark. Some people even fly into White Plains NY. These are viable options in the future.

White Plains is a great option for parents flying in as an alternative to Bradley since it is a small airport with cheaper car rentals than JFK/LGA and no need to cross over the bridges from Queens but it is problematic for reaching without a car. To get from there to New Haven requires a taxi fare of $18+ to get to a train station towards New Haven. White Plains fares can be high and comparable to connecting flights (via Philadelphia) right to New Haven. Hopefully some renovations will enable larger plains to once again land at Tweed airport in New Haven.

You can take a CT Limo from JFK to Yale, but it takes a looong time, especially if there are other passengers that need to be dropped off before you.

I usually fly into Bradley and take a CT Limo from there. The ticket says it takes 1.5 hours for that trip, but it’s almost never over 1 hour.

Purely from a time perspective, which is the FASTEST way to get to New Haven from JFK- North Metro line, Amtrack, or CT/GO Limos? Can someone also list the approximate travel times for each (as in if they only vary by 10-15 min. it probably doesn’t matter)

Also, Re- Bradley or White Plains, if you can get direct flights there, go for it, but if you need to connect my limited experience is the fewer planes you need to get there the better and JFK, Newark and even LaGuardia might be a better bet if you can get a non-stop.

Go shuttle estimate 2hr 45", but it has always taken +/- 2hr15’, they usually make 2 stops between LGA and Phelps Gate. DD never took the shuttle after 3:30pm, it may actually take 2hr45’ during rush hour.
Metro North train takes 1hr45’, so the whole trip from the airport to Yale will take at least 2hr30’ depending on the time of the day.

MY DD has the option to fly direct to all 5 airports in the area. We chose LGA because among the NYC airport is the easier and faster to walk around. At White Plains the limo services are expensive, and at Bradley the flights from my area are 2 times more expensive than to NYC.

^ so Lilymom, how does your daughter get to New Haven from LGA?

^ she uses the GoShuttle. But as YaleGradandDad posted the round trip from CT Limo is cheaper. We usually reserve on-way since she is able to get a ride back to NYC, or visit a friend before flying back.

The best way is by one of the two airport shuttles. D has done this many times. For some reason she prefers CT Limo over GO Airport Shuttle. They both cost about the same. During the most popular times they drop the students off at Phelps Gate. They also have other drop off points around campus including most of the Hotels in New Haven.

I would strongly discourage the train option, even though it may cost a little less. It requires getting on and off three different vehicles- JFK to Grand Central, then Metro North, and then a shuttle or taxi from the train station. Three potential sources of delay. And it is generally best to avoid the East river bridges and midtown traffic- you can never predict that with any degree of confidence.

Quick question about the Shuttle services; between 2:15 and 2:45 hours? and how often/where do they stop?

GoShuttle stops at the airport at lest once per hour. I know Goshuttle will add extra shuttles if there is a demand for it.
It has a counter at the baggage claim area. If no attendant is present use the phone by the counter to inform them of your arrival, the driver will meet you at the counter.

You can find more info on their website. I’m not familiar with CT Limo procedures.

My son takes the Go shuttle from JFK…finds it very convenient and comfortable, he takes it after a long 15 hour flight and is happy with it as it goes every half an hour during peak periods

If you’re coming on 21st I’m sure you could sign up for the OIS bus (check out OIS website) and travel with other Yalies ;)

I’m assuming that the CT Limo and the other transportation services do not drop the students off directly at Yale. How would we go about getting to Yale from wherever we get dropped off?
