How far exactly is the John Hopkins medical school from the main campus? I heard it was a few miles away and there is more safety concern there than at the Homewood campus?

I think it's only a few miles away. As for safety, Homewood Campus is very safe and I think all of the concerns are with regard to the med school.

The Hopkins shuttle takes you right to the middle of the area, where there are also numerous security posts/booths. It's always very busy and I've never had a problem, even at night. It's a very short walk from the shuttle stops to any of the JHMI buildings.

The drive between the Homewood campus and the Medical campus is just about 10 minutes. A bit slower if you are using the shuttle, probably 15 minutes then.

As far as location in the city, the Homewood campus is in Charles Village, which is one of the safest parts of Baltimore and also one of the most residential. The Medical campus is in East Baltimore and neighbors some rough areas. However, as has been said, the security at the Medical Campus is quite heavy ... I have actually heard it been called a "fortress" before.

I have never heard complaints from undergraduates at Homewood who do research or work at the medical campus re: saftey. The shuttle makes it so simple.
