JHU BME v. DUKE BME

Hi,

JHU BME vs. DUKE BME
JHU is ranked #1
Duke is ranked #2

I've heard the surrounding area near JHU isn't very nice
The Duke area is gorgeous

Can I really go wrong with one or the other? I'm leaning towards Duke, but I know I would feel weird passing up JHU BME, one of the toughest programs to get in..

Both are top notch schools for BME, and you sure can't go wrong with either. Pick the school that fits your personality and non academic factors. JHU is a little bit more diverse, but campus is not all that great. From what little I know, Duke has edge in Bio-imaging (like MRI etc) and JHU is strong in Bio-Medical sciences. The academic differences are not relevant to undergrad, but may matter if you are cosidering e.g. Masters. Let me know what you decide and why. All the best.

JHU is #1 for a reason. It has endless opportunities for research, and yes for undergrads!

I am quite familiar with JHU and it is a very nice campus-- Baltimore is not the safest city, but the campus is bordered by some very nice areas.-- some not-- but obviously any "city" school has that.

I think you have a very tough choice.. but my humble opinion is not to pass up Hopkins.

If you go to JHU, be ready for cut throat competition. The BME program is one of the best things that Hopkins has to offer. But Hopkins is weak in almost everything except biological sciences + BME. I would choose Duke. More choices available and what not.

What about International Relations, Writing Seminars/English, History, Public Health, etc. ?-- Hopkins is very strong in all of these. As an example my brother attended JHU as an IR Major, went on to their School of Advanced International Studies and now is working at the World Bank.

I think a lot of Hopkins strengths are overlooked by applicants because of its international reputation in medicine and the sciences-- but those that overlook don't know Hopkins.

And as for "cutthroat"-- also a stereotype. Yes, it's rigorous and competitive but speak w/ some BME students and I bet they tell you that this is a misconception that is overblown by many highschool students

GOOD LUCK :)

I agree with PB, due to the fact that JHU is tops in Medicine and science its humanities programs are overlooked, my favorit novelist, John Barth, taught there (I think he still does)--so does Azar Nafisi ("Reading Lolita in Tehran").

go to the US News website. There are new Engineering rankings and Engineering specialties listed, like BME.
