JHU chances :)

I'll make this short I promise.

went to Johns Hopkins CTY program for five years in a row (totals at about $15,000) << does this have any bearing??

3 excellent teacher recs
so-so essay

thanks in advance. i got deferred from georgetown, if that means anything.

I forgot to add that I'm in chamber orchestra (violin) and have played piano for 12+ years, typical asian stuff.

Not sure any of these are important to colleges, but I'm also member of NHS, Tri-M Music Honor Society, German Honor Society <-- no leadership positions in any of these, though.

I'd like to major in bio and do pre-dental. Also, I am not asking for any money.

Anything would be great. Thanks.

i've got about the same stats as you... and got deferred ED hopkins bio and VERY disappointed
i dont have musical talents but have competed at the states & national level in science olympiad and have gotten individual 5th & 7th place respectively
i also have lotsa non-science-y clubs such as student govt n stuff...

i am sorry. you look like a top candidate in the RD pool.

i thought about applying ED, but realized that they wouldn't see my bio sat ii score, taken in december, which i think is somewhat key? considering the major...

anyway, with a deferral, three months suddenly seems that much longer eh :P good luck to the both of us though, and keep me updated! -sophie

I would say you both have pretty good chances in RD. The only thing that might hurt you is the class rank. They put far more emphasis on your schoolwork and class selection and what not than they do on test scores. I got into hopkins early decision with an SAT score 80 points lower, but i am ranked in the top 3% and have a 99 weighted GPA. We have similar SAT 2's.

Would it help that our school does not disclose rank? The 14% was estimated (by me). However, you're right, the 95 is nothing spectacular especially in my school where grades are ridiculously inflated.

I also feel that my EC's are lacking.

Thank you for your input, I appreciate it.

i think u'll get in for sure mium with those stats, but....colleges are weird, i dont know hwy they deferred xun. but good luck to both of you ^_^

ryan & nguyent, would you be interested in reading my essay?

this'll be my last post on this thread, because i hate obnoxious people who bump their threads like, 20 times a minutes. i'll pm or email you the essay if you have the time to evaluate it, thanks.

mium, im not really sure if im the right person to ask to evaluate ur essay. i mean i'd be glad to help you, but i dont like how alot of people "evaluate" other people's chances because i dont know anymore than any other student about ur chances of getting in. also, i dont like to look for grammatical errors, and im not good at "correcting" things because i cant correct my own things. lol its not that im not willing to help, its just that for grammar/english, itd be best if you ask ur english teacher. for others, u may want to ask ur friends who know you more so they know hat ur tryin to say, and all the rest is based on ur creativity and how u write ur essay. i mean, even if i read it, im not going to change it drastically based on MY opinion...but if u want, u can email me nguyent@umbi.umd.edu. goodluck with admissions process ^_^
