I'll be a high school senior for the school year '05 - '06, and I suspect my guidance counselor is only being nice when I ask her what my chances are at some of my top choice colleges haha... Anyway, here's some of what I'm made of:

SAT:
550 Writing
540 C. Reading
750 Math

SAT II:
760 Chem.
650 Physics
630 Math 2
I took them all on the same day! But I will retake them ASAP

GPA: 4.35 (weighted)

Rank: 22/631

EC's:
Nothing stellar, and it probably would not help me much by listing them, but some things that I've been involved with:

Courses I've taken:
9th- All honors
10th- All honors classes & Orchestra
11th- AP Chem, AP American Studies I, and the rest were honors classes (Spanish IV, Pre-calc, Physics, English III)
12th- All AP Classes (Environmental Science, Physics, English IV, Spanish V, Calc BC, American Studies II)

Model UN
Varsity Tennis (Freshman Year - Present)
Honor Society (Treasurer in 9th grade)
Student Council (Treasurer in 9th grade)
Class Council
I've been involved in a few other smaller things, but nothing amazing.

I'm just curious of how I would stand at ED and if anyone has other school suggestions. Thanks! I appreciate your time (even though it probably won't take that long to type out "you have no chance" lol.. j/k- I hope)

Stereotypically Asians have amazing test scores, but I guess my invitation to that club got lost in the mail. By the way, I'm an Asian male living in the suburbs of Philadelphia.

I'm planning on retaking the SAT I's in Oct. and maybe taking Math 1 and 2 (again) in Nov. How does JHU look at SAT II's? I've looked on their website, and it does not seem completely clear to me. Also, I got a score of 610 on my Bio E/M SAT II back in 9th grade, will that hurt me significantly? By the way, thanks for the insight so far!

when it comes to SAT IIs, JHU does put some weight to those because they "strongly recommend" them.

Sorry to break it to you, but your SAT IIs aren't stellar. However, you can offset your SAT II scores if you do well on AP exams. A lot of schools will overlook a say... a 490 in English Lit. if you got a 5 on the AP Lit exam, because the SAT IIs test HS material while the AP exams test college material, and obviously, college material is more important.

In terms of SAT Is... a high math score and low reading/writing score (not saying they're overall low, just low for JHU) will not get you in.

In terms of ECs I would say you're average: Varsity team, some leadership positions.

GPA/Rank is very strong though, that'll give you a boost.

My overall opinion: I am willing to bet a lot that if you applied ED, you'd get deferred.

Is it still possible for AP test scores from May of my senior year to affect my chances of being accepted to JHU? I have only taken one AP test, and the score is still pending, but by the time I apply for colleges, I won't have any other AP test scores under my belt. How does the ED system work for JHU? If I'm deferred from the ED process, is it thrown in the trash or put among the RD applications? Thanks for the explanation, and I'll continue to pray.. lol. :(

What type of students apply early decision to JHU? I always assumed it was mostly athletes and those that are in circumstances out of the ordinary. I know my test scores are not stellar, but I figure those kids with stellar scores are going to be applying to the Ivy Leagues, etc., and not necessarily Hopkins as ED. I could be wrong (as I am always on this lol..), but I need some insight on this matter! Thanks.

Hey...my advice to you is to definitely retake your SAT I's (SAT II's are OK - they are no longer required this year for admission, and your scores will not make or break your application). Your grades/rank are perfectly fine. I had the same problem as you when I was applying to JHU but I got in RD with very lackluster stats (top 25%, 1400 - 620V/780M, 690 2C, 540 W, 630 Physics, 620 Bio). My EC's were good but not stellar. What got me in were my essays. JHU looks at essays heavily in the admissions process - they put as much emphasis on them as your grades, and they are more important than test scores. If you want, I can send you my essays for you to read. Just IM me on AIM or PM me. Good luck!

Also, after talking to an admissions officer at JHU, I've found that about 20% of the ED admits are athletes, so don't let the high admit rate fool you. Also, the ED pool is very competitive, but as long as you make yourself stand out you have a chance.

Just wondering if anyone else has any insight to my investigation! By the way, I ordered the blue book from TCB. Does anyone have any comments, good or bad, about it? Thanks.

I think you could be in or out. Like others have said, you don' t have anything that jumps out and smacks me in the face in either direction (although I do think your idea for retaking SATs is a viable one.)

Maybe I'm just being hopeless, but why do I suck at English (C. Reading/Writing) so much! :( I just feel like no matter how much I prepare and practice, I won't be able to reach "acceptable" scores.
