JHU ED Acceptance Rate

According to CollegeBoard.com, Johns Hopkins accepts 379/723 (~52%) students early decision. That's a high percentage compared to many other schools of its caliber - is there a particular reason for this, like maybe the applicant pool is self-selective?

Actually, I think those are older numbers. From the current ones I have seen, it appears that for the Class of 2010 they admitted around 470/1,004 meaning roughly around 47% of applicants were admitted ED to fill 39% of the class early.

I think that's roughly similar to schools at the same tier (lower ivies, washU, Duke) etc.

First, the college board numbers are out-dated. They are from two or three years ago. I don't have this past year's data in front of me but I know there were 1,004 applications and the acceptance rate was 44 or 45%. (So the numbers WealthofInformation posted are close for the Class of 2010.

Second, every school looks at Early Decision differently so I can not comment about what other institutions do. Since the ED applicant pool for Hopkins is traditionally about 10% of our overall applicant pool we review these students based on their individual merits. We do not have a pre-determined acceptance rate for ED nor do we have a pre-set % of our class that we want to fill. Over the past few years the ED applicant pool has been quite strong overall and we tend to choose to fill about 1/3 of the incoming class. Last year's stats are a bit skewed since we never expected a 23% overall increase in applications in one year.

I think the most important thing to note about ED at Hopkins, is that the only reason you should ever apply ED to Hopkins is if we are your clear first choice. It is not easier to get in overall, since ED applicants are held to the same standards. The only noticeable difference is that ED applicants are reviewed with more time.
