JHU ED Chance Me

Application: Early Decision

Stats:
GPA: 3.89, although it was 4.0 heading into Junior year and I’m concerned the bad trend will hurt me
SAT Score: 2160 Composite, will take again, have taken SAT prep course but I doubt my score will improve much
ACT: 32, no plans to take again
SAT IIs: 760 Math II, 700 US History. Also took French and got pathetic 630, so I plan to take that and the US History again in about a month, but I don’t really think I’ll do any better.
APs: APUSH 5, French 4, Calc 3 (don’t know if I have to report that  ) My school doesn’t do AP classes but there are a few classes where we can take APs if we want, so those were the ones I did. I am currently taking Physics and Stats and will do the AP for those this year, but obviously not before the application

Extracarriculars: 1) Tournament chess player, was the “Greater Baltimore High School Chess Champion” at one point, also tied for first in DC’s scholastic championship, still not master strength yet though  2) Sailed for my school’s team for much (but not all) of my high school career, went up to regattas in DC, Virginia, even Rochester, NY 3) Am on my school’s Model Congress and have also done Math Competitions for my school

Work Experience: None

Service: My school runs a lot of service events which I have participated in such as hosting a book festival fundraiser for charity, cleaning up adjacent parks, etc, but have not independently pursued community service

Summer Stuff: I did JHU CTY for three years, although my classes were hosted by F&M and Dickinson at the time, spending three weeks each of those summers taking courses, mostly in philosophy which I loved. Also I did a CTY Chesapeake Bay program where I slept on a boat and sailed from Baltimore to Annapolis and a few other places over a couple of days

Other things worth noting: I am a double legacy, both parents went there. I have attended probably at least fifty JHU lacrosse games in my lifetime- my dad and I are huge fans of the sport and obviously they were really good when he was in college. I would absolutely love to go to JHU and I think I may apply ED but am very concerned about not getting in. My college list is very top-heavy so if I don’t get in ED it will be a tough time trying to get into my other schools regular decision.

I think you have a great shot. How involved are your parents in the JHU alumni association?

They have both given quite a bit of money and my dad is also a member of some sort of alumni board organization, but I don’t know specifics.

Also forgot to put I was a National Merit “Commended Scholar” based on my junior PSATs

What major are you applying to? and what is your gender and race?
I think you have a really good shot with the double legacies, gpa while on the downward like you said is still excellent and scores aren’t subpar by any means.

White, male.

I am generally interested in humanities, social sciences, international studies and government and I am pretty undecided for a specific major.

Does anyone know the ED acceptance rate for Hopkins? They seemed very hesitant on reporting it in information sessions

Last year it was 29% while the RD acceptance rate was 12.4%.

I think you have a good shot, especially if you’re going in with double legacies and non-STEM major. I honestly don’t think CTY really affects their decision making, as you pay money to do it and they don’t care about it’s demonstrated interest. If you really want to go to Hopkins, do ED. It’s a 28.9% acceptance rate for ED (they probably didn’t want to report it since it sounds so high) and 10.2%. It’s an overall 12.4% acceptance rate, but you can see that doing ED can give you a tremendous leg up.

JHU ED is low reach

Thanks for the responses. I think my CommonApp essay was very good and my JHU essay was at least okay, probably good, but maybe not enough to stand out. Seeing all the other threads like this on CollegeConfidential is making me seriously doubt my chances of getting in. Most of the people in my family and my friends at Hopkins say I have at least a 50/50 of getting in, but my stats say otherwise (especially my SAT IIs which are really bad, and my Calc AP). I do go to a high school that is known to be very challenging and I have a very good college advisor at my school, so maybe that can help me.

I got my SAT composite up to 2240 with the last SAT, but I still feel as if all the other JHU applicants have at least one 800 SAT II and better extracarriculars. If I don’t get into JHU, I will apply to Wash. U in St. Louis (probably my second choice), Tufts, UPenn and Brown (Hail Mary/ultimate reaches), and Tulane. All of those except Tulane are extremely tough to get into so I’m not feeling very confident.

Good luck to everyone else applying to college ED.

I got in. I guess they like legacies. Thanks for all the help, guys
