JHU Financial Aid Question

Hello all,

I was accepted to JHU as a member of the class of 2012. Although JHU is my first choice of school, I received a more competitive financial aid offer from Tufts (they named me a Neubauer scholar, which means that I will receive grants for the student contribution portion of the package and that I will receive a generous 10,000 stipend to pursue research/travel abroad opportunities).

Can I call Johns Hopkins and ask for them to match Tufts' offer? My family doesn't have much money and JHU is quite expensive. Has anyone else had any luck when it comes to matching aid offers at JHU?

~Thanks

here's the response you'll probably get from the financial aid office:

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, no

Sry2say, but most likely not.

The only schools that regularly match are ivies and that's because they're extremely wealthy.

I actually tried asking the financial aid office to do just that, since Case Western offered me a very nice $28k per year. The answer was no.

One of my friends tried asking NYU's admission office to match an offer, and they didn't either.

However, I do know of someone who managed to get one of the Ivies (Brown? Don't remember too well) to give him extra financial aid.

Not that JHU's funding is lower in comparison or anything, though. If you search for a list of college endowments on WikiPedia you'll see that JHU's 2007 endowment ($2.8 billion USD) is actually higher than that of Georgetown, Brown, Cal Tech, and many other top schools. Hopefully they'll change their financial aid system in a year or two...

there are lists of other students trying to take your spot, if you don't want to come, they'll simply pick the next in line, unless there's something REALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLYYYYYYYYYYYYYY special about you that makes Hopkins ABSOLUTELY must have you...
but hey, it doesn't hurt to try, right?
