The only troubles with going to JHU are that I live in California and it will be a long, lonely stay for me all the way in Maryland and that I received little to no financial aid because I applied too late =/. I got like $10000 for Davis, and I live about 40 mins away from the campus. Would I receive the same education if I went to Davis and do you think, in general, it would be worth the trouble of going to JHU? I mean, if I went to JHU, then I'd have to worry about paying back all the loans after I graduate.

Oh, I am planning to study medicine and become a neurosurgeon by the way.

Bump. Anyone, please? I have less than 6 hours to decide where I will be spending the next 4 years of my life =/

if it were me, i would pick jhu with no hesitation.

btw, i wrote that without taking into account the medicine/neurosurgeon thing. in that case, i would pick jhu with negative amounts of hesitation.

You won't receive the same education at Davis as you would at Hopkins. Davis is about 5 times the size, and is not on the same level as Hopkins. However, if you are uncomfortable being away from home in a new place, and would rather not pay off the debt, go to Davis, but don't expect it to be of the same caliber.

The individual attention you will get is not superior at Hopkins either. With a campus size of approximately 5000 undergrads, you won't get the personal one-on-one contact that you would imagine like in highschool. It is definitely a ton worse at UC Davis, which has 25,000 undergrads.

Size and location. How far away do you want to be from your parents? Close enough so they can come down and say hi to you every weekend when you want to be hanging out with friends or party? I don't think so..

So what did you choose?

Nah, I really want to be close to home because all my friends are here. I'm kinda scared of going to Johns Hopkins. Besides, I don't really want to study medicine, something more like engineering :S

So what should I choose? (I extending the deadlines till May 10th)

Any more opinions, sil vous plait?

Much appreciated.

You should definitely go wherever you feel most comfortable. Go to the school that fits you, which may or may not be the school with the better numbers. It's not like an education at UC Davis will hold you back. It all depends on the individual. I know someone who got his BS and MS at UC Davis and has the same job as someone who went to Carnegie Mellon undergrad then got his masters at MIT.

is this a joke?

Why would this be a joke?

We are financially troubled and live only about 50 minutes from Davis, so I think Davis would be the better choice.

oh and mindlessmusings, lemme guess, that person was a comsci major?

If you apply yourself you will do very well at UC Davis. It is an excellent school with a great science tradition. You don't need to compromise yourself and your family financially at this point, but DON'T BE LAZY because it feels comfortable. Work your butt off, find the great professors, and you will be fine.

Go where you feel more comfortable and in your situation, it seems that Davis fits the bill. Its a good school and it seems like it fits your situation better than Hopkins will.

of course! it does sound like a joke to me

It does sound like a joke since JHU is comparable to Berkeley academically and not UC-Davis. And if you were only able to get into UC-Davis...it might be in your best interest to stay away from Hopkins.

UC-Davis seems like the better choice considering everything the topic creater posted.
