Hello everyone,
So I would like input on what college to attend next year.
I would like to double major: Classics (Latin/Greek) and History.
I'm a Korean-American (not a Fob) living in Virginia and I want to do well in college, while having fun. I can't decide between these two colleges because of the whole "prestige" issue (JHU is a renowned university, whereas everyone in Virginia seems to go to UVA), rumors (JHU = all work, no play), etc. You can probably guess where my parents want me to go.

Factors to consider:
JHU:
- Asking me to pay about $2000 per year
- Very prestigious (don't know how I was accepted - probably because I didn't want to be a doctor)
- The perennial "So you want to be a doctor?" question
- Everyone studies their brains out (?)
- Smaller school

UVA:
- Asking me to pay about $8000 per year
- Very strong Classics and History departments
- Happy students
- Larger school
- Everyone in VA goes to UVA (kind of puts me off)

JHU is not all work no play. Go visit. There are also countless threads on this (the social life. I partied a ton when i was there and still got into a top grad school). I don’t see much of a dilemma here. JHU is the better school academically, and it’s cheaper. And it’s more prestigious domestically and internationally.

for $2,000 a year, this is a no brainer. Hopkins will give you an international community unmatchable by UVA as well. go visit and have fun at Hopkins!

Hopkins is NOT all work no play. People here go out all of the time. There is an active social life that is not dominated by Greek life (only about 20-25% of students are in Greek life). If you want to go out, you will. If you want to study all the time, you will. At Hopkins, you can make the balance between your social and academic life as mutual or as one-sided as you want.

Also, Hopkins has very strong Classics and History departments. Do not let the premed reputation skew your opinion - only about 25-30% of students end up applying to medical school. Check out what our humanities programs have to offer: [Humanities at Hopkins](http://apply.jhu.edu/humanities/)

25-30%? ^^^ That still seems like a ridiculously high percentage. Do you mean that 25-30% of kids who intend on going to medical school in their freshman year actually end up applying?

Anyway, go to Hopkins. 2000/year? As someone else said, it’s a no brainer.
