i live in virginia and i got accepted into uva. i got waitlisted at jhu. and let's say i get off the waitlist at jhu (which i hear is not a likely story). should i go for premed at jhu and pay out of state tuition or premed at uva with in state tuition?

the thing about uva is that i have so many friends from high school going there that i feel comfortable and confident that i can pay full attention to my studies, whereas at jhu, i would know no one and it would take time away from my studies.

so i guess the main question is, would it be worth the out of state tuition to go to jhu? or should i stick with uva? they are both great schools that i just cant really decide :/

cross that bridge if you come to it. Get pumped about UVA!

jhu is a private, theres no such thing as out of state tution

what i meant was tuition that was similar to out of state at uva

Is Hopkins better academically than UVA? Generally, yes. Is it worth the difference in tuition? That depends. If you and your family are going to be stretched thin financially as a result (i.e., lots of loans), then no, it probably is not worth it. UVA is a fine school–one of the best if not the best public university. But if your family is lucky enough to be able to afford it, or if you get admitted off the wait list with enough financial aid, then it might be worth it. But remember, unlike regular admissions which is need blind, the admission committee is “need aware” of wait list admissions because the availability of financial aid at that point is dependent upon what is left over from regular admission offer acceptances.

I suspect (speculation here, no inside information) that there is a reasonable likelihood that some wait listed applicants will receive offers because the financial crisis will force more than the usual amount of accepted students to turn down offers from private universities. But I also suspect that the first ones off the wait list will be well qualified candidates who need little if any financial aid to attend.

Congratulations on UVA.
