Tied with Brown and Northwestern http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/usnews/edu/college/rankings/brief/t1natudoc_brief.php
IIRC JHU was 17th last year.

me likey!

we'll overtake WUSTL & Cornell in no time :)

We were I think number 7 a few years ago. We're better than Duke and WUSTL and Cornell and we don't need rankings to tell us that.

keep on telling yourself that.

Also Newsweek says JHU is the "hottest" (not sure what that means) school for pre-meds. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20228437/site/newsweek/page/0/

JHU should have the same ranking as WUSTL and Cornell.

I couldn't stay away roberthid...

Just a few of my thoughts:

(1) I like the #14 ranking because we've got some great company in Northwestern and Brown. Great schools to share the ranking with.

(2) I also like the fact we moved up two spots from last year (we actually were ranked #16 in last year's rankings) simply for the reason that I will not have to field any inane questions about why Johns Hopkins is falling in the rankings.

(3) I especially like the release of the rankings this year, because it provides an excellent opportunity for the critics of these rankings to have a loud voice and hopefully people will listen this time around.

(4) The release provides me with the chance to re-post one of my favorite Hopkins Insider entries I've ever written:

September 8, 2006
Sweet Sixteen???
http://hopkins.typepad.com/hopkins_insider/2006/09/sweet_sixteen.html

And now the one main reason I can't stand these rankings:
...
...because of posts like the ones above saying what schools JHU should be ranked with or higher than or lower than or etc. etc. etc. AN absolute waste of time and distracts so many from the real way of searching for college - FIT FIT FIT FIT FIT FIT FIT FIT FIT!!!

"I also like the fact we moved up two spots from last year (we actually were ranked #16 in last year's rankings) simply for the reason that I will not have to field any inane questions about why Johns Hopkins is falling in the rankings."

Oh AdmissionsDaniel, you never "have to field" any of the "inane" questions on here. Actually you make it quite clear that if you do find a question "inane" that you won't answer it. But you and the staff and Dr. Latting just may have to answer to the fact, or at least face up to it, that rankings do matter and they are here to stay.

"I like the #14 ranking because we've got some great company in Northwestern and Brown. Great schools to share the ranking with."

Yes, like you said, great company. I agree. These rankings to the masses put us in such good company and I bet you we see, perhaps, a lil spike in apps--and those considering Hopkins for that matter. Good news brought to us by these rankings!

on the other hands, shouldve Hopkins fell a couple spots?

Wouldve you responded to the post?

Wouldve it hurt applications? maybe maybe not, but it surely would not have helped.

I want to say that I think the Hopkins Admission staff is doing a fantastic job. More apps than ever for many consecutive years, more ED apps than ever..etc. Obviously there are so many more factors that make a student apply and come to Hopkins that seem to hush these rankings. But the way I see it, these rankings and rankings in general are extremely powerful and cannot be ignored. They can easily tip the scales between one school and another. These rankings touch on key pressure points on the teenage college application culture-- Peer pressure(self explanatory) and parental pressure (parents are probably over half of the purchasers of the USN&WR ranking)

We would like to think that our teenage applicants are as savvy and mature about college selection as those reading the applications- but that is a silly assumption.

Rankings are popular, here to stay, like it or not.

PalmBeach: "...shouldve Hopkins fell a couple of spots?" WHAT???? Your poor grammar is rattling my brain, completely mitigating your effort to make some good points.

Eeek! My bad. I wish I could edit for you gabriellaah. It is gross. I'll admit it :)

Just doin' my job, PalmBeach...We all goof!!!

No matter how right you are about fit (and I am certainly an advocate of fit), Admissions Daniel, you are fighting a loooooosing battle. The rankings are here, and for better or worse, eagerly devoured by a public of students and parents on pins and needles, awaiting the results. Unfortunately, colleges/universities cannot afford to ignore the ramifications of high-mindedness when it comes to these evaluations. Sometimes you control, and sometimes you just do not. The pen is indeed mightier than the sword, winning the competition every time.

i'm sure people buy us news thingy for other reasons lol, probably research funds, etc., if people buy us news only for the rankings, they only need to get the decade+ old version since almost all the schools in the 2008 version have the same ranks as some 12+ yrs ago lol, us news just tweek it back and forth a bit every year lol

Gabriellah,

Thank you. Much more eloquently and comprehensively stated :)

I think you somewhat agreed with me! wooohoo!

I agree with Admissions Daniel, it is all about fit, but is is always nice to see that others recognize what we already know.... what a great school JHU is!!

Twosonmom: DITTO!!!

PalmBeach33480:
If I remember correctly we got into a whole CC debate about the rankings last year, and I have no desire to rehash all of that again. I do though feel it is important to respond to a few of your points:

1) What if Hopkins would have fallen a couple of spots - would I have posted on CC?
Absolutely. I think last year proved that fact. I commented on CC last year when Hopkins "fell" in the rankings, and as well addressed the "16" ranking in a full blog entry.

2) What if Hopkins would fallen - would it hurt applications?
No. The proof is in the fact that we witnessed another rise in applications last year (over 8%) following a year when we had a 23% increase. Over the last five years the Hopkins applicant pool has risen by a higher percent that any of our competitor schools (BY FAR) and our ranking has fluctuated 1,2,3 or so spots.

3) The Admissions staff have to answer to the fact that rankings matter.
I have never said that rankings don't matter and neither have any of my colleagues (including Dr. Latting). I have personally said they are an absolute waste of time when choosing what colleges to apply to or attend.

The main disagreement that I think we have is that you feel that rankings are so important that we need to shape policy around making sure our ranking rises every year or so we crack then top ten. I disagree whole-heartedly. See my posts from last year or the blog entry: http://hopkins.typepad.com/hopkins_insider/2006/09/sweet_sixteen.html

4) FINALLY...
...just read what darkhope wrote...
THE RANKINGS RARELY DRASTICALLY CHANGE!!!
'08 = 14
'07 = 16
'06 = 13
'05 = 14
'04 = 14
'03 = 15
'02 = 16
'01 = 15
'00 = 7
'99 = 14
'98 = 14
'97 = 15
'96 = 10
'95 = 22
'94 = 15
'93 = 15
'92 = 11
'91 = 15
(I always wonder what happened between '95 & '96 or in 2000 -- oh wait, nothing except US News changed the way they rank to encourage more people to buy issues.)
(And if you look, this lack of change is consistent for almost all the top 20 schools each and every year.)

PalmBeach:
You are abolsutely allowed to have your opinion and state it, but if I were a betting man I would put my money on the position that the vast majority of students using CC to seach for information about JHU truly appreciate the assistance I provide on these forums. Search through the other school forums on CC -- not many real Admissions Counselors are present.

This is not part of my job responsibility. In fact, I could stop posting today and not one of my colleagues or bosses would blink.

In addition, the work I have done with the Hopkins Interactive site, the student blogs, my own Hopkins Insider blog, and the JHU Forums, are all projects that I initiated when I arrived to work at Hopkins. These are projects I have put a lot of time and effort (blood, sweat, and tears too) and I am very proud of the results. But if you look at my list of job responsibilities, those projects are way down on the depth chart.

Kudos to AdmissionsDaniel. Thank you, seriously.

Hmm...I was browsing through Newsweek magazine today and a pretty nice review of Johns Hopkins was written on there =]

But they did put in the wrong math SAT score...650~700 as 50%? I think not...760 I believe is the correct one. Wonder if they'll correct it?
