is johns hopkins more of a holistic reviewing school like chicago or a specific school like MIT(not to the same degree)? also they don't have tufts/washu syndrome do they? i mean..they don't just reject qualified applicants because they think they may not matric...i hope not: has anyone sent in a separate essay articulating why they think jhu would be a perfect fit?

although plenty of people think that jhu is only for pre-med, but that is not true. although that is what i plan on doing, im pretty sure that also have a great IR and writing problems, etc. and i dont think they have the tufts/washu syndrome, they accept whoever they think is qualified...or at least this is what i got from who got accepted from my school last year (none of whom went, cuz they all went to like harvard/yale instead)

okok
1) jhu has a really good IR program. my friend wanted to apply because it was really good, but ended up going to georgetown

2) u mite encounter that "syndrome" ur talking about in RD, but im not sure about that. people tend to use jhu as a "safety" (even though the school is sweet)

3) the admission people recommend sending in a seperate essay on why u think it is a good fit, at least i saw that on the jhu message board (pretty helpful site)

To answer your question:

Yes, Hopkins directly defines themselves as a holistic adcom. -- http://hopkins.typepad.com/ --
"Hopkins takes a truly holistic approach in the way we review applicants, focusing on all parts of the application and not just the admissions statistics. Standardized test scores, unweighted GPAs, number of advanced courses, etc. all matter but so does a student's leadership skills and academic enrichment experiences, their creativity and originality." --

Every university takes into account whether or not the students they admit will matriculate. And honestly, I think most universities (not only Tufts and Wash U) will hesitate to admit someone who falls into this category.

Hopkins is in a tough position, seeing as that they are just below the Ivy's in ranking, but technically just as good. Most who apply to JHU are using it as a backup, and would pick an Ivy over it (though this is rapidly changing). So do what you can, if you apply RD, to show the adcom that if admitted, you will attend.

huh... i might send an additional essay in that case
