I hear the city of Baltimore is a really crappy place and JHU is socially dead. I know several people that go there and they don't seem to be enjoying it. Can any current student tell me about JHU's social life?

Might want to start a different thread with just a tad more tact. Then you’ll get some actual replies about the social life there instead of crickets. They probably think you’re trolling.

You might want to search for old threads since there are SO MANY like this one. You’ll find people who are dissatisfied, and people who are simply loving it here. I myself find that there’s a HUGE mix of people here in JHU that you can never really have a stereotype. I’m sorry I’m not replying in length, but really this question has been asked so many times that I think some JHU students are tired of dispelling the rumors over and over again. I suggest you also look up the SAAB / Hopkins Interactive blogs to get an idea of student life here.

As a current student, I can tell you that both of these concerns are total myths! Firstly, Baltimore is an amazing city. It’s incredibly eclectic and unique and offers a huge array of fun things to do along with really beautiful sights. Fells Point has some of the most delicious restaurants, the Inner Harbor has a stunning view and a lot of attractions, and Charles Village (the neighborhood that JHU is situated in) is a great college area. Baltimore has fabulous museums, a ton of concert venues that attract great bands, and huge city pride that makes everyone really friendly and united (go to a Ravens or Os game and you’ll see this)! I’ve lived here my whole life before coming to Hopkins, and I can assure you, Baltimore is a great city. As for the second concern, you’re definitely talking to the wrong people! At JHU, the people who tend to be unhappy are the ones who don’t extend themselves or make involvements in the things that they love. I can assure you that, just like Baltimore, there are a ton of things to do on campus and the social life is anything but quiet. The social scene at JHU is what you make of it; if you want it, it’s certainly there, but if it’s not your thing, then there’s no expectation. It’s probably that way at any college, since a diverse student body will produce a diverse range of things to do. Baltimore and Hopkins are both incredible places to be that offer a ton of opportunities for fun.

Here are some blogs by current students! I think this’ll give you a better look at the things that students do on campus and in Baltimore
