JHU swimming recruitment question/advice

Wondering if anyone has any experience talking to the swimming coaches at Johns Hopkins and can shed some light...

Several years ago, when my son was applying to colleges, Hopkins was one of his top choices for both swimming (preferred high-ranked D3) and academics. Academically, he was way up there (~2400, ~4.0, all AP sciences, etc. etc.). Swimming-wise, he was in the mix for Hopkins top times, even though he wasn't a year-round swimmer. We could get NO interest - not even an email response - from the Hopkins coach. He gave up on Hopkins, and applied and was accepted to his top two choices - both schools with equal or better academics, one was d3 (highly-ranked) and one (Ivy) was d1. We chalked it up to his swimming times not being what the coach was looking for BUT never understood why he didn't even get an email...? He went to his #1 choice, had a blast, loved his major, his swimming times improved, he qualified for nationals... It all worked out great for him and he never looked back.

Fast forward to this year with a younger daughter looking at colleges... Hopkins is her #1 choice. She loved everything about it when we visited months ago. Somewhat the reverse situation... She's a very highly-ranked swimmer. Would be one of the top women on the team. Has had interest from many programs. Academically, she's up there (~2100+, 32 ACT, 3.8, lots of APs but not as many as the brother mentioned above) but more "in the mix" I'd say. Again, not a word from the coaches since submitting the recruiting form over a month ago.

Any thoughts, ideas, recommendations? Is this normal, or should we take this as a sign and move on? (She would consider applying to Hopkins ED without the coach... but we'd at least like to know that she could walk on to the program! Also, we're concerned about passing up other ED opportunities where there is coach support.)

Thanks!

Blind leading blind here too. Is it the same coach as 2 years ago? Is it conventional to call the coach or email the coach? Perhaps, you can contact the coach and arrange a visit to meet them and a current student?

We have a rising senior girl interested in a different sport at several D3 schools. Academics are driving her search but we are just beginning to look at the team and coaches at some of her potential schools. At one D3 school (not JHU), after a campus tour and visit we found the team practicing and the coach came over to talk to us. My d and the coach exchanged emails and have been in contact ever since. We have no idea if this is customary. It all just kind of happened. On that same trip, we watched a D1 practice at another school and barely got a nod of acknowledgement. We were not expecting it. It’s a popular ivy league school and the level appeared much different than the D3.

I’d be interested to learn anything about how this all works:)

Post your question in college admissions - athletics. There are a lot of people who know swimming over there.

Go on the jhu website and email the coach. I’m in a similar position for another sport and I highly recommend shooting an email and making phone calls to get in contact with the coach. You can send in film as the season goes on and if the coach likes your qualifications he or she can write you a letter of recomendation.

Definitely email/call the coach. Can’t remember which schools but some of the coaches never responded to recruiting forms.

I’m sure they will want your daughter. Her academics will be fine for the school if the coach wants her (which he should). PM me if you want more info on recruiting at JHU.
