Is it true that 90% of JHU undergrad applicants to JHU medical school get in? Does JHU like to accept many of its own students?

plus does JHU have gpa deflation for bme (biomedical engineering) and does JHU have a possible business/ management science/ econ minor that a studetn could combine with a bme major?

Absolutely not. The numbers touting 90% are for admission to a med school, not JHU med school.

A lot of people come here with the notion that it will guarantee med school admission here. That's not true. The largest group from any school going to our med school does come from our undergrad program, but it still isn't a huge number.

//does JHU have gpa deflation for bme (biomedical engineering)//

Dirt McGirt: You did not answer for the gpa deflation. Is the above statement true?
I have heard before the same "90%" don't know exactly whta it means. does it mean 90% of the JHU certified pre medical students get into (any) med school or 90% of BME students getting into med school?
thanks for your time.

90%+ of premed students get into some medical school. As it has been said, Hopkins undergrads make up the largest number of students at Hopkins medical school, although the number, I believe is something like 17 students.

BME is just like any other engineering department in any other engineering school. GPAs are lower, and that is the case in any engineering program anywhere. And remember, not all BME students go to medical school, it's not like BME is THE pre-med major. Many BMEs go onto Ph.D programs and Masters programs. But many do go on to medical school, and I'm sure that 90%+ of BMEs get into medical school as well. Remember, GPA isn't all of medical school admissions, and medical schools know the rigor of Hopkins and engineering programs in general.

coolguyusa123 is right - while there are more Hopkins undergrads at Hopkins med than undergrads from any other single college, there's no distinct advantage for Hopkins undergrads in terms of admissions. And the 90%+ rate means that 90% of those who apply for med school and go through the committee process with the Office of Pre-professional advising get accepted into some medical school.

As for BME, I don't think there is really grade deflation, per se. Engineering GPA's are traditionally lower than science/humanities GPA's and I think most med schools realize that. But still, it's not like the classes are curved harshly and no one gets good grades. Just as an example, I'm looking at the distribution of final grades for Molecules and Cells, one of the sophomore BME classes that I took last semester, and at the end of the semester, out of 134 students, 22 had A's, 80 had B's, 28 had C's and 4 had D's. (There were +/-'s in the final grades, but I ignored those.) Most classes are curved fairly the same, with a majority of students ending up with A's and B's.

i was at a JHU open house in the summer. and they said that the BME major is not recommended for ppl who plan to apply to medical school. is there a reason for that? you guys make it seem different.

Probably because it is a really really difficult major, and something they don't want to promote as both a pre-med major and a good idea to go from BME to medical school.

What they mean (and I've heard this many times for the faculty here) is that the BME major is not a glorified pre-med program, which is what many people think when they apply. Just cause you want to go to medical school doesn't mean you should apply/major in BME. You can major in anything you want and still go to medical school. If it happens that you like engineering and medicine and BME, then you can major in it. But remember that BME is an engineering degree, so it's a lot of math and physical science and it's not meant for all premeds.

Also, darkhope, where did you try to post on the message board and it wouldn't let you? I'm on the group that runs that board and I think any registered member is allowed to post almost everywhere, so if there's a problem, I'll try to fix it.

no, it's fine...i posted in the wrong place anyways lol under the "ask admissions"...in which the questiosn there are obviously directed towards the admission staff/volunteers hehe. thanks anyhow =D~!
edit: no, the forum is working fine, it's just a post was deleted, probably the rule of "Do not post links to other Web sites, products, or services"...includes cc, which i originally personally believe to provide quite a bit of reliable info =-(

in the discussion about med school acceptance rates and grade deflation/inflation (YAWN >>> BIG YAWN) you all forgot to answer one of the questions of the OP:

"does JHU have a possible business/ management science/ econ minor that a studetn could combine with a bme major? "

The answer is yes. Most students pursue the Entrepreneurship and Management program in the Whiting School of Engineering ... but there also is the option for a minor or double major with Economics in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences:
