is JHU a smart choice for a premed/bio hopeful? i've heard that for those in premed, bme, biosciences that jhu stidents are super "study hard" ppl and therefore tough competition. also i heard that JHU weeds out some students applying to med school cus they think the students wont "make it". oh yeah..i heard food isnt that great too..so is it worth it to go thru 4 grueling yrs (of competition and so-so gpa AND food :]) and maybe not have a shot at med school? should instead wait 4 more yrs after undergrad and apply to JHU med school?

im also thinking about applying to brown ED, duke, carnegie mellon, upenn, cornell. what other schools would be good for me. i will apply to most UCs since im CA resident. thanks

Med School does not require any specific major. I would say of the schools on your list that you will find competition at all of them and perhaps more so in the traditional pre-med majors of Bio/Chem.....but you have no advantage to gain by doing one of the traditional majors.

yep it is a tough school for premeds... but do not believe all the hype about the heavy workload and that "weeding out" is something exclusive to JHU.

JHU has a great rep because it not only has great resources, but it is arguably the best school for a premed to prepare for medical school and its demands.

You have some great schools on your list.. i'd definitely be adding some safeties though. Cornell, Duke, Penn, etc.. also great schools for premed if you have your heart set on it!

atlantiz - your post intrigues me...you mention all the things you "have heard" and I think every topic has already been addressed in past threads at CC. Read through the archives and you will find all points of view about JHU -- in relation to pre-med, competition, "weeding out," food, etc. Then choose who to believe -- those who are asking about all the rumors or the current students at Hopkins like myself. And if you haven't visited yet, you should do so.

JHU is an awesome place, but find out for yourself. Don't just listen to hearsay and speculation.

laxfan04, where are the archives? haha im kinda new to this. so is the weeding thing true? how tough is the premed competition and what kind is it (is it tough cus ppl want to do better than others, ppl work hard so profs give more work, or just the drive of ppl themselves that make up jhu's competative atmosphere? oh an hows the food? haha thanks!

I liked JHU so much because it was a well rounded school and excels in many other areas that aren't just pre-med or science.

Here's a scenario:
I'm doing Pre-College here at JHU (I recommend it to rising Sophomores-Seniors...but not Pre-Frosh-going-into-JHU, not anymore anyway), and I am taking Sys. Neuroscience. The professor who is teaching it, says that it's his first time teaching it to undergrads but he's been teaching it to Med. Students for the longest time. I believe he is also a regular Professor for the Topics in Neuroscience course and may be teaching Sys. Neuroscience for the fall. So there opportunities here for you to be taught by professors who have/still teach at the Medical School Campus.

That's always a plus!

Besdies, you can't go to a college and expect not to work hard. What do you think the real world is going to be like? A picnic? ;)

i recently checked the JHU site, and I think i saw that only one techer rec is needed. i that right? most schools want 2..just making sure. also what is typical gpa/sat for accepted JHU students. what are u guys gonna write about for the $10 question..i have no clue yet haha

recommendations - to apply you are required to submit two, one from your guidance or college counselor and one from a teacher. you can send more if you want but not too many. i'd say 4 or 5 is the max.

I have a question does the undergrad school you go to really matter. Let's say is there much of a difference between going to Chapel Hill and JHU? Will it matter when applying to grad school and I don't here of many people going to the grad program of the school they graduated from undergrad like JHU?

I've browsed around the pre-med forums where they say the undergrad school doesn't really matter. But if you think about it, not every school offers the same kinds of opportunities. It's a matter of personal preference. If Chapel Hill floats your boat, then go for it and don't for settle for anything more or less that isn't you.

well if it helps you, according to the Hopkins information session, they said that the highest percentage of people who go to Hopkins Med School comes from Hopkins Undergraduate (it's 14 % or something like that). Next is brown with 8%.

i think the "work hard" atmosphere of Hopkins is what makes it so great. as someone else said, you go to college to learn, and in Hopkins i will have no doubt that i will be getting a top notch education.

i will be applying undergraduate this year! :)
