Yes.
Login to portal > click on Applicant Center > Admissions > scroll down Preliminary Financial Award > click on the link to the letter
Yes, I can see that but it says āPreliminary Financial Aidā not āPreliminary Financial Award.ā When I open that it says itās only available if you submitted a FAFSA. We didnāt apply for aid, so no FAFSA. I was wondering where a merit award letter would be in the portal? Have merit awards even been added to the portal yet or only financial aid awards?
We didnāt submit a FAFSA. Is there still a chance to receive merit at this point?
Same. Efc is 27000 and price is 46000 oos ā¦ no aid nothing very disappointing
Zero for us too. Very disappointing after getting Honors College.
does anyone know what the Madison Recognition Award is? Thatās the one i got, still a little confused and not sure if itās from the department or notā¦
This is the department one. Which school are you part of? My son was told he may be eligible for one from the Business school . On his portal we canāt see any award and canāt open the Preliminary Financial Aid link
i am apart of the business school and they emailed me and said to write a short essay and I did, I think it could have been that one
Thatās in then. Congrats!
I was under the assumption that merit scholarships were coming laterā¦is that not the case? Also, have honors invitation already been extended?
not really sure, i think they were supposed to email me If i got the scholarship but I had no communication from them and saw it on my finaid packet
@Vadaddy my D was accepted to Honors College already, but not sure if they do it in waves or not? But we have $0 in merit according the the financial package we got last night - Iām not sure if thatās the end of it, or if they will still revise that. She applied to Dingledine - a super long shot, I know, but was hoping for something. Itās off the list if thereās nothing.
An old data point. My son is a JMU sophomore and a Madison recipient. The last week of March, he received an email from his Dean asking if he was interested in attending JMU. If so, they would offer him the scholarship. He had to fill out a form and once it was returned, then the award amount showed up in mid April. Until then, we had $0 merit dollars as well. He did not submit for Dingledine. He did apply EA not RD
Very interesting! This is why I told my son he is going to need to wait until May 1 to make his final decision. Had he already declined JMU or just did not respond?
Good information - thank you. I know that my daughter will not want to wait that long to make a decision. I really think they need to do this differently. Iām sure theyāre missing out on excellent students who just thought they could afford it as an option.
He didnāt decide anything until that point. It was mostly between UVA and JMU. Many of his friends went to UVA, but he preferred JMU and he really liked the sound of his IA major. And the $$$ made the decision much easier. He loves it there, covid and all. He is off campus this year though.
My older S was an alternate for a full ride at one school. The final person didnāt accept until May 1. So this seemed early to us.
We also got the Financial Aid Letter and did not receive any aid, grants or scholarships. My daughter has an Honors College acceptance and applied for Dingledine (have not heard anything), as well as the Second Century STEM Scholarship (deadline I believe was last week). She has very strong stats and JMU is her top choice, but there is no way she can go there when she has other options at half the cost. JMU does miss out on great OOS students with their price tag and very limited merit awards.
agreed, their grants are not up to par with other schools and my net price is nowhere near my efc
The timing of JMU merit awards is confusing. And, also whether an award would show up in the portal or not? I thought they said mid-March but it seems some are hearing earlier and not through the portal. D was admitted early action and accepted into the Honors College - all through the portal - but not a peep about merit. Since we did not apply for financial aid we do not have a financial aid letter in the portal. Guess only time will tell.
