JMU Early Action for Fall 2022 Admission

Happy to share. My daughter has a learning disability and an IEP. She is in a small pull out math class with a special education teacher. They work at a slower pace and are behind the gen ed kids level. Her advisor told her they would have liked to see a higher lever math taken and more rigorous level classes. She does take all academic level classes and her GPA is a 3.8. She’s a very good student and gets mostly A’s. Although we appreciated the feedback my daughter was very upset by this response. Almost as upset as the deferral she received and I get it. Her best friend who has the same GPA got in because of a regular math class. She got in to other great schools but JMU was her #1. We will see what happens during regular decisions. I’m not quite sure it’s her #1 anymore. While I 100% get their requirements it hurts just a bit to always be the underdog to something you cannot control. But I’m a strong believer that everything happens for a reason and what will be is what’s meant to be.

Who did she send the letter to? Her regional JMU admissions counselor or to the JMU admissions office in general? Thanks!

Does anyone know when honors notifications come out? My son received a scholarship notification yesterday. :slightly_smiling_face:

How was the scholarship notified? Email?

It was in the portal under the scholarship hub. He wasn’t expecting to hear yet. He was looking for the decision date and the scholarship happened to be there. I’m not sure if he got an email too though.

Did he apply for specific ones or simply fill out the “General Application”?

He applied for a specific scholarship.

It was right through the My Madison portal so I believe it went directly to her admissions councelor.

Does honors usually mean any merit?

How does everyone feel about the JMU Honors decisions? DD was deferred (surprised about the deferral since she was accepted to UofSC Honors which she had thought was more competitive). What are the typical stats for HMU honors?

Do you mean accepted at JMU but for the Honors college at JMU was deferred?

Okay, same happened here. Accepted to Honors at UofSC which is considered to be a top honors program and deferred to honors program at JMU. I was wondering if it was due to major choice. My son is a biology major and I believe JMU has a special honors program for biology, so maybe more competitive? It’s okay because he wasn’t that interested inJMU since his older brother goes there but I was hoping for honors to at least give him something to think about.

Also thinking about demographics: a northern VA student is more highly desired at UofSC but common at JMU.

Can anyone tell me how JMU is viewed by Virginians? Our daughter has it as her first choice (still waiting to hear back on her deferral). But, both her college counselor and peers are saying it’s a party school and kids don’t take their studies seriously. We didn’t get that idea when we toured, but now she’s second guessing herself. We are in MA and wonder if we are out of the loop? Any input is greatly appreciated!

Here in northern Virginia, JMU is viewed as a strong school with lots of school spirit, with strong academics (at least in the programs my two kids have been interested in. It’s a big school, and big schools are labeled as party schools oftentimes simply based on the school’s enrollment.

I’m a Massachusetts native and remember the moniker Zoo Mass. Not so easy to get in to UMass nowadays.

Good luck to your daughter!

Thank you! Yes, we noticed the school spirit, pretty much every student we saw had some sort of JMU swag on
That’s good to hear. We are in a crazy town where kids are sometimes embarrassed to go to UMASS, so I think the peer pressure is getting to her. I really appreciate your feedback!

Honestly, if you want to find a party at JMU, you can do it. You can also study your butt off if you choose. JMU is consistently rated the top VA school for graduates getting a job.
