My impression is that JMU does not really award merit to OOS students, unlike Delaware which is actively trying to attract OOS students.
She has already committed to Pitt, so it doesnât change anything- was just not well informed I guess. Her grades are well above average with great ECs and essays. Just surprised.
My D also got the Presidential Scholarship to UD but was not offered Honors College, so the whole process is strange. I am sure your D will like Pitt based on people I know whose kids go there.
@tumagmom so they basically said no, thatâs it? What a shame. Did she ask for feedback on test scores vs no scores?
My D got some money. It says itâs a scholarship but seems to be tied to need. Fixed amount for 4 years. 2.0 gpa required to keep. She got more from other schools but the cost of JMU is still lower or very close.
Iâm sure itâs due to her 27 ACT. Itâs all good. If she were considering it, I would have her ask for more details, but sheâs pretty set on Pitt.
Pitt is a great school, especially at in state rates.
And #7 BSN program in the country. That sold her!
I talked to JMU (Financial Aid/Scholarships) yesterday because we cannot access the âPreliminary Aidâ document. I specifically asked how we would find out about Merit scholarships without viewing that document and they told me it would come in the form of an email from a particular Department. When I asked if they have all been determined/sent out yet they said they didnât know. They also said if the student isnât awarded anything (Merit) there wonât be an email saying that - just no communication. A little frustrating for a student trying to put all the available information (acceptances/Honors admissions/merit scholarships/impressions) together to make a good decision in a timely manner. Like other students here, my D got Honors + a good scholarship to UDel and other great universities - just wish JMU did their Merit communication a little differently because we really like the school.
That is really a shame. My DS got significant merit to other higher ranked schools, so I am surprised he got nothing at JMU. He has 4.7 WGPA and 32 ACT. Thought that would at least get him something. Oh well!
It is down to PITT and JMU for us as well. Tough choice. We like them both
We are OOS and received merit award for JMU but no merit from PITT. Going to accepted student events with daughter at both schools. Good luck
Similar here. 3.95UW, 1510, most rigorous and nothing. Kind of surprising as DD receive 2 full tuition (not housing/food) at 2 higher ranked colleges. Not heartbroken about it as her #2 choice came through last week.
has anyone oos received an official admissions packet from jmu? i know some in state people have but i havenât and itâs been almost a month since acceptance! most schools take a few days-2 weeks for the official packet to be mailed.
Yes, in NJ. It doesnât say a ton, but it was a big purple envelope. Honors college and award only by portal/email so far.
Yes, my son received a packet in the mail maybe about a week ago.
Same here in MA, my son received his about a week ago.
Has anyone here taken the plunge and submitted their deposit yet?
i have !
We submitted our deposit after our visit in January!
MattPNJ:
Is the difference between Pitt and JMU about $10k a year? Itâs a tough call. I do think Pitt is a better school academically but is it worth the extra $.
My personal feeling is that there are maybe 50 schools in the country that make a difference when looking for a job. Itâs more about your child and where will they be happy and succeed.
My daughter loved JMU also! We are in state and Pitt is a top BSN program, and JMU is not direct admit so it was a no brainer. But I can see how that choice would be difficult!!
