Aside from what's on the JMU website, can anyone fill me in on the JMU Honors program? I'd love to hear from students who have been in the program (or their parents). Pros and cons? Thanks!

i dont know much but my daughter was accepted into the honors program and she will be going down for a visit next weekend. I will let you know what we find out

Hi!
First, excuse my comment my o key is semifunctional so expect omissions of its use etc.
So I attended JMU prospective students weekend and looked very intensively into the Honors College and from what I have learned there is absolutely no reason to attend it if you have the opportunity to. Actually I had not applied to it originally and now that I am accepted to JMU (and attending it!) I am planning to apply for Honors.
There are three major advantages:
- Priority Registration. You get to register for classes befre others thus ensuring ur placement.
- Class credits. Because the classes are considered to be of a higher caliber its credits can “triple count”. For instance, you take an English 200-level class and it considers ur general education requirement as well as a seperate requirement for ur major.
- Better housing and a tighter community. The housing for honors college is significantly better (see website 4 more details if desired.) and thus creates a tighter and more productive connection between students.

Does anyone know if you have to live in Honors housing if you are accepted into the Honors program? My daughter is planning to apply to the Honors program, but is also auditioning for the Theatre program and is more interested in the Performing Arts dorm, if she gets accepted. Is the Honors housing optional?

You do not need to live in the honors housing. One of my students is a freshman in the honors program this year and lives in the Arts Living Learning Community… it is not only a performing arts dorm, it is all arts majors :). I believe that 1/2 of the freshmen in the MT program are living in the Arts Living Learning Community this year and love it! They all take an arts class together as part of the community – it is an experiential course. Last Friday they went to a gallery… they go to performing arts events, have special lectures and workshops all as part of the class.

KatMT, I should have known you would be my answer lady!! My D submitted her JMU app today and is now working on the Honors app, but was concerned about the dorm thing. Glad to hear that it would still be an option for her is she was accepted into both the Honors program and the Theatre program. We heard great things about the Arts dorm/ learning community when we were talking with one of her friends there. Thanks again for your help!
