JMU-Music Industry

JMU FAQ

"Do I have to play an instrument or sing to be a Music Industry major?
Yes. A Music Industry major receives a Bachelor of Music degree and is required to be in a studio (classical guitar, trumpet, voice, etc). However, the music industry minor does not require that the applicant play or perform on an instrument."

Whats the difference between a Music Industry Major, and a Music Industry Minor?

when you major in something you are taking alot more classes then a minor, which is more of a general basic type of class that usually requires only 18 or so credits.

The Music Industry majors are School of Music majors... as you posted above, they are in a performance studio on a major instrument (or as a singer), they take the full music core, and courses in music business and/ or recording.

The Music Industry minor is open to students in other majors at JMU. In this case you are not a music major -- I think many are Business majors, although, I know we have a few in the School of Theatre & Dance -- and I am sure there must be some in thr School of Media Arts and Design and Communications. The minor in music industry allows students who are not performers, but who would like to work in music management or recording to take a specific set of courses in this area.
