JMU’s NPC is very basic. Anyone willing to share what their real financial package included? If you received scholarships rather than loans, we would appreciate seeing your stats. We are OOS. TIA!
Our JMU visit is coming up in less than 10 days. Anyone able and willing to share?
@cheeringsection My son received his preliminary financial award letter (at midnight!) so hopefully you received yours as well.
He received $0 in scholarships and $5500 in unsubsidized loans. 3.95 GPA, 34 ACT. In-state, so the cost is very reasonable anyway.
It’s not clear to me whether the individual colleges have made all of their scholarship awards, but I really wasn’t expecting anything.
I would not expect much financial aid if your are in-state.
My son got the same as eh1234. No complaints though, it comes out to about $23k a year after the loan, so that’s pretty cheap as far as colleges at the level of JMU go.
My D got the same as @eh1234 and @VaParent19 – and we also were not expecting anything beyond the unsubsidized loan offer.
We are in-state and received my son’s award overnight as well - the 5500 unsubsidized loan offer. DD received the same 2 years ago from UVA so we knew what to expect.
My son did get $2000 from GMU this week (from school of music) after initially getting the $0 plus loans weeks ago, but he is currently trying to decide between JMU and another school.
Email came a bit past midnight and not sure why I was so excited:( S got $0 scholarship plus $5500 loan. He applied for BM so I’m wondering if music school has announced scholarships yet. We are OOS. This is the only school that didn’t give any merit money at all! I heard they were stingy, but S got into Honors College and I thought that would give him a boost, but no.
Thanks to all that have shared. I am still hopeful for my DD20 but this will help me manage expectations.
I am out of state and received 0 dollars in scholarships and 5500 in unsubsidized loans as well
We are OOS. Daughter has about a 3.7/33 (super, 32 one sitting). Wasn’t expecting anything and got nothing. Puts JMU out of range compared to other schools.
My daughter got an email from the College of Health of Behavioral Sciences that she’s been identified as meeting the criteria for eligibility for a Madison Award for Academic Excellence ranging from $6K-$12K if she answers a few short essay questions.
Anyone else get that or get it from one of the other colleges?
That’s great @lexluthor5! No e-mail here, but I suspected that these preliminary award letters probably didn’t include college and program-awarded merit.
It looks like they have only 350 Madison Awards to offer, so congrats to your D.
@eh1234 well it certainly doesn’t say she’s guaranteed anything. It says “I am contacting you for additional information as we consideration the final recipients of these scholarships.”
Is completing the essay more of a formality or are they only picking a handful of people who complete the essay? I can’t really tell.
At this point, our daughter has already committed elsewhere, though who knows what can happen, so not the worst thing to keep all options open. JMU at $12K off would put it close to the COA of the other school.
Hmm, JMU’s scholarship page makes it sound like they give Madison Awards without a separate application, but maybe I’m reading it wrong, or the various colleges have their own procedure.
@lexluthor5 Was that email after the Financial Aid email arrived?
@Propinquity4444 yes, the email came late yesterday and the financial aid was posted earlier in the week.
Just curious, any NMF out there that are at JMU? I do not see any scholarships related to NM but was curious if you felt that was considered and somehow included in the package you received?
After initially receiving $0 grants or scholarships my D19 received an email yesterday with a $5,000 four year scholarship. 3.9 uw/4.4w, applied test optional (1240 sat), 3 ap the rest honors. Price still too high for OOS
