If I don't get into UVA or William and Mary..which school do you think would be a better school to attend...
I've already been accepted to JMU Early Action and Mary Washington soon
What do you think?

I have a sibling at both. JMU/bigger school, lots of school spirit, football team, lots and lots of partying, great food, hot chicks, good school

MDubbs (Mary Washington) beautiful campus, strong academics, smaller classes, much smaller school (1/3 the number of students) close enough to DC and Richmond, hidden gem, great school

Interested in a small school with a great reputation? Mary Washington

Interested in a larger school with great school spirit and a football team? JMU

Mary Washington has a bit more prestige factor, IMHO

Good Luck!

My older brother went to Mary Washington (before he transfered) and he hated Fredericksburg. However if you like the smaller school and are not much into athletics, Id suggest you go there. Alot of my friends have said some great things about JMU (sorry Im a bit biased) and it really does have a beautiful campus. I would strongly suggest JMU for other reasons also but I am too lazy to type them all.

I'm not sure what to do..I hear so many mixed things about Mary Washington and I've yet to visit...I've been to JMU, but I'm not sure..

UMW is a handsome, but small campus, with limited campus activities.

JMU is a handsome and larger campus with more going on on campus.

^so are you suggesting dudedad...
I'm not sure still.....what do you all think. I need more opinions!

So which has a better rep? UMW or JMU..i know that JMU is going to be more fun but is UMW that bad in the party area?

Just take my advice...Mary Washington sucks at everything but academics. If thats your thing, youd be happy there. I live in Virginia and didn't even know what University of Mary Washington was until last year.

We're going to need more background info on you...either school is a good choice depending on your wants and needs...

Are you a partier? You'll be happier at JMU, easily.

Do you want small classes and be on a first-name basis with your professors? You want Mary Washington.

What are you thinking of studying? If it's business-related, go to JMU. For pretty much anything else, UMW is better IMO.

Are sports and school spirit important to you? JMU beats UMW hands-down with that.

Comparing the two schools in general is like comparing apples and oranges. What do you want to get out of your four years in college?

I don't party too much, but I'd like to somewhat and I know that's not available at Mary Washington..
I'd like a bigger class setting to get the college experience.
I already got into JMU Business.
I like school spirit and would most likely go out for JMU Golf Team as a walk on

The only thing is, is that I like the city or a city close by. I like shopping and concerts. I have to have music nearby all the time and I think Fredericksburg would be much better for a city setting.

You'll be spending most of your time on campus and with college related activities. Sounds like you answered your own question.............I think JMU would be a better fit for you. Don't pick Mary Washington because of it's proximity to Richmond. Mary Washington is definitely a small school environment. If JMU isn't what you had hoped for, you can always transfer..........chances are you will love it there and thrive. Everyone I know who goes to JMU, loves it. It is rarely anyone's first choice school..........lot's go because it didn't work out with UVA or Tech......but everyone loves JMU once they are there.

Seconding Pedsox. It definitely sounds like JMU would be a better fit for you, at least in my opinion. Contrary to popular belief, UMW does have a social scene, but it definitely doesn't compare to JMU. Also, Fredericksburg isn't that much more cosmopolitan than Harrisonburg is :P I visited once to check out JMU myself and it has all the big stores and restaurants that Fred has. As for the concerts and music, I heard JMU does a pretty good job of bringing in bands and other music acts from time to time, so that might make going to school in a rural area a little easier.

At any rate, good luck with whatever choice you make!

thanks a lot and I'm still waiting for UVA and W&M

ppl really dont know much about UMW's party life. Its looked down on. I have a friend there and he loves it. They do party down there, its becoming a lot better since the last two years. They even have an "underground frat" Psi Uplison. That being said, nothing can beat the party life at JMU. But all i am saying is, its not like you will have no social life if you go to UMW. I think UMW is really good when it comes to academics but its really under rated when it comes to social scene. Its not as bad as they write.

I went to UMW and hated it so I transferred. I would definitely suggest going to JMU, I probably would have liked JMU better even though I didn't apply there. At UMW, the academics are great, like everyone has mentioned. Unfortunately everything else is lacking...As far as Psi Upsilon, they do a little to alleviate the painful experience that is UMW's social scene, but it really isnt enough. They host the same dance at the same place a few times a semester. Good Luck with your decision and feel free to ask me any questions about UMW!

Where did you end up going?!

I think you guys have it all wrong. UMW is a wonderful. Students can party at any college they attend. If you cannot find a way to party, you need some help. UMW has plenty of parties every weekend if that is your thing. If you want to attend a prestigious school and learn something that can give you a decent future, go to UMW. JMU is just a UVA wannabe. UMW is a school with a heritage that gives you the opportunity to find out who you really are and what you want to be in this world. UMW is a small college but has offered me the same things I could have enjoyed at a large university while giving me opportunities I would not have at a larger university. My UMW professors all know me by name. When I need help with something like financial aid or when I struggled in econ, all I had to do was to call people at UMW. The professors here are wonderful. They take time to help you and to help you find solutions. At JMU, I felt I was just a number. No one there seemed to care. I realized I needed to transfer before the end of my first semester at JMU. I hated it there. People at JMU could care less if we were learning anything in our classes. I had an econ professor at JMU no one could understand. No one in the class could interpret what he was saying, and we had to read the text to figure out everything we needed for the exams. Students had already complained to the administration, but none of the administrators seemed to care. I made a complaint and one of the administrators gave me a lecture about how they needed to have minorities as professors. I am a minority and was offended by their attitudes. I thought we were there to learn something. They were more worried about how they looked to the public than how students were doing. When I began at UMW, everything was different. My classes at UMW are smaller, the teachers here are interested in helping students, and the administrators listen to students. I do not regret the time I spent at JMU. I had a great roommate who will always be my besty, but I am glad I decided to transfer out so soon. Anyone who has spent a few years here can tell you why it UMW a really good college. I hope it always stays small. It bothers me a little that I can see it is expanding. I hope it will never become another JMU or GMU. And for the students at JMU who say that UMW is not enough of a party school, I look forward to being your boss one day.

It’s funny because everyone I knew that applied to JMU and got rejected got into UMW… These weren’t the brightest kids either. as a current student, I’m dumb founded by your problems with a professor as I have yet to find a problem with any of mine. I chose JMU over VTech and I don’t regret it.

P.S. next time, how about using paragraphs instead of rambling…it’ll give you more credibility.

jmu is better.

I have no experience with JMU, but I’ve visited Mary Washington and can say that I completely hated it. The people seemed just a little off, the information session didn’t highlight academics, and the tour didn’t even take you to the library. Personally, I got a horrible vibe from Mary Washington, although Fredericksburg is really nice.
