JMU or UVA? Yes this is a legitimate question.

So I've recently taken a tour at both JMU and UVA. The problem is, I think I like JMU better, but I have a very high chance of getting into UVA, so would it be stupid for me to pick JMU?
I plan on going into either international affairs or business, which I know is better ranked at UVA. And overall I like the academics at UVA. But I feel more like I belong at JMU. I loved their campus way more. And to be honest, I'm not a big fan of UVA's campus. JMU was beautiful, the people were so nice, and i loved the town more. I could really just see myself going to JMU over UVA. I'm so confused on what to think now. Help me!

Anyone? Please :)

I would still do UVA, as it has a much better reputation. But everyone has their own path, so if you really want JMU, go to it. But I’m sure business is much better pursued at UVA.

I just don’t know what I want more. If I go to JMU, I know I’ll be missing out on some amazing academic opportunities and interships, but if I go to UVA, I will just miss the area in general, can’t really put it in words.

Then go to JMU. I’m not entirely sure what you preferred about JMU’s campus over UVA’s gr. The highway splitting the cam

*Grounds. The highway splitting the campus was a big turnoff for me and every building on Grounds has amazing architecture (yes even the e school!)
Double post because of my iPod.

Apply to JMU’s honors college then. You probably have a very good chance of being accepted if you stand a good chance at UVa. There’s also the Madison Achievement Scholarship worth about 11K over 4 years (my son received that, but turned down for UVa). Did you apply EA to JMU? Get this done before deadline on Nov. 15 if you can. If regular decision app. then you have a bit more time. You have to submit this separately after you have submitted your JMU application (two separate apps.). JMU is a great choice for some, but I think you may belong within the honors college):

[JMU - Apply to the Honors Program](<a href=“Honors College - JMU”>Honors College - JMU)

Here’s the deadline info:

HONORS EARLY ACTION: NOVEMBER 15 HONORS REGULAR DECISION: JANUARY 31
All students may apply anytime through January 31. However, students who applied to JMU through the JMU Early Action process have the option to apply to the Honors Program through the Honors Early Action process.
Applications must be received AND transcripts must be postmarked (if mailed) by these dates for applications to be considered. Honors Early Action applicants whose transcripts are received after the Honors Early Action deadline will be deferred to Honors Regular Decision.
Honors Early Action applicants do not have an advantage over Honors Regular Decision applicants in the selection process. Additionally, some Honors Early Action applications may be deferred to Honors Regular Decision.
Decisions made by the Honors Program have absolutely no bearing on admission decisions made by JMU.

As an involved alumnus of UVa, I have to say that you should not only look at the schools from a 4 year perspective. You should ask yourself which school will TRULY be part of your life for the rest of your life. UVa is all about engaging its alums – around the world. Not only was attending UVa truly awesome as a student, hands down, my UVa alumni experience (even here in NYC) is amazing – from alumni mixers to academic seminars to social/sporting events. It rivals the alumni experiences of my Ivy League colleagues and friends. Many of my close friends went to UVa, but I met them in NYC after I graduated, which was over 10 years ago. There are only a few other schools who have as tight a network as we do.

In short, your 4 years at UVa give you tangible/intangible dividends for the rest of your life.

Then go to James Madison.

I agree with suggestion to apply to JMU Honors. FYI, my daughter felt more comfortable at JMU also.

CollegeGirl, you sound just like one of my son’s friends a few year’s back. He was so torn btw the two. Got into both schools and truly agonized over his decision. I think he visited both schools twice before making up his mind, talked to students, sat in on classes, talked to professors, etc. He went in as a business major, too. He ended up at JMU and is now a senior. I remember he caught some flack from parents of friends and even his mom questioned his decision, just bc of UVA’s great reputation. But, he has had great opportunities to intern in DC, has excelled in his major and has been very, very happy overall. He just felt JMU was the best choice for him personally. I agree with others recommending the HC there. This is your education and your choice, so go with your gut, but do your homework and don’t make a rash decision. Good news is, you can’t go wrong with place- they are both fine institutions! Good luck!
