Well I applied to UVA, Virgina Tech, William and Mary, James Madison, and Maryland and got into VT and JMU, but waitlisted at the rest. Assuming the waitlist for UVA does not come through, which university do you guys think is the better choice between JMU and VT. I mean "better" just in overall how well respected they are, and which school is better for a guy who wants to go into business like myself.

I should also mention I got into the Pamplin school at Virginia Tech which is why my dad really wants me to go there. However, I've heard that the business school at James Madison is better and that JMU is overall more respected. Any input would be great.

I think VTech is the more respected school. JMU is up and coming though. They have some weird finance related major that the only other school in the country that has it is Princeton. According to admitted students day last year.

We visited JMU this past weekend and it's a gorgeous campus!

Everyone was so friendly and had great school spirit!

The average class size is 33, with some classes having as few as 3 students to as high as 298. Classes with 500+ students isn't unheard of at VT. And no TAs teach classes at JMU.

And the food was incredible. 11 places to eat on campus, including all you can eat buffets on the weekends. I've heard that VT's food isn't that great.

So, as far as every day "quality of life", I'd definitely choose JMU over VT!

I would definately choose JMU over Tech. The campus is great, and the people are really nice! I think that they have a really good business program too. Plus I am going to JMU in the fall so I am kind of biased :)

I'll be going to Tech (if not accepted to UVa), but applied to JMU and was waitlisted (not sure why). If you're into smaller classes and a smaller school, go with JMU. Personally, I like the "big school" atmosphere of Tech. The Pamplin school is one of the best for business.

Pamplin only ranks high because of its grad programs.....its undergrad education is severly lacking.

for undergrad business, JMU wins hands down. Employers love the COB 300 program at JMU.

Also, remember that you will have to APPLY to the business schools at Tech and JMU. Just because you are admitted to the schools DOES NOT mean that you will get into the business program.

FYI...I am a QFIN major at JMU....JMU is one of only 10 schools in the nation to offer this major, and the firms in NYC fight over QFIN grads

QFIN = quantitative Finance.....basically the major that allows you to handle security and derivative analysis with an undergrad degree, which is rare. Its a tough major, but it is worth it when you graduate. Very few schools offer it, so it is an added bonus at JMU

wrong again.......please try reading the ranking criteria.

PAMPLIN is ranked BECAUSE of its grad programs.............which USNEWS weighs heavily. Pamplin's ranking is based on its endowment.......sorry pal. For undergrad, its merely decent

There is a reason that JMU business grads are heavily suited, while VT grads(ie my friends) have nothing going for them. I will go ahead and judge based on employer response, and JMU b-school destroys VT on that criteria.

As I said, VT is great for grad school, vet school, sciences, or engineering, but you would be wise to pursure every other undergrad program elsewhere.

VT and JMU have different stregths, but in the end, they probably are tied for the 3rd best public in Va....it depends on WHAT you want to major in.

what I meant was that my friends at Pamplin ARE NOT getting many interviews. I meant that they had very little going for them in that area.

Not that long ago, JMU had a higher avg. SAT than VT. JMU is going through a HUGE ammount of growth (11,000 students in 1998, 16,300 now) and that is why the SAT has dropped some. JMU is expected to have 20,000 students by the time growth is done. VT, UVa, and W&M all refused to grow, and JMU was ordered to by the State. GMU has also had to grow.

VT is more well known because of its Football team. In the state of Virginia, JMU and VT are considered to be VERY similiar, and if it comes down to those two for a college decision, then you decide based on what you want study
