Jmu

What are my chances at JMU for an out of state male?

3.28 unweighted (really tough grade scale)
Lots of AP/Honors courses
640 verbal
570 math
630 written

INvolved in a non school sport that took 20-25 hours/week, with multiple state (individual) championships. Competitions across the nation.

Good EC's, letters

Lots of volunteering/leadership in local political campaigns

My son is a junior at JMU (entered Fall 2011). He got in with a 3.6 weighted gpa from in state under RD (didn’t try EA) and having taken 8 weighted classes (combo of AP and IB). His SAT’s were similar to yours. If your weighted grades bring you close to a 3.5, you may have a chance. Out of state is generally more difficult, though. They really look closely at your choice of courses/strength of curriculum, so if you truly did take challenging classes, with many being AP or IB, and took AP Calculus (or IB equivalent), you may have a chance. I would guess that you will be unlikely for EA but that you have a chance for RD, especially if you bring your mid-year senior grades up in the meantime. They also value seeing an upward trajectory in your grades. Keep in mind that the high schools in Virginia, particularly Northern Virginia, are extremely competitive (often tougher than private schools) and are some of the top public schools in the nation. You are competing with thousands of students from these schools, many of whom load up on challenging classes, including AP, IB, and dual enrollment. I would say you are borderline for RD and unlikely for EA, but applying EA is not a disadvantage. If they can’t accept you EA but think you’d have a fair chance or higher during RD, they will defer you.
