job after college

so i know this isn't the best place to post for job prospects since most everyone here are starting college soon, but i'll try anyway since a lot of people here are familiar with san diego companies.

i'm graduating in the next 1-1.5 years. i have a gap year before i (hopefully) start med school, so i wanted to be productive and get a job. i'm not too knowledgeable about the job market, but is it hard to get a job with just a BS in biochem? i'd love to work at pfizer or amylin (i withdrew from an interview request my second year...does that make me at least somewhat competitive?). high gpa, previous research, etc.

oh, and i would consider the bs/ms program but i'm pretty sure i wouldn't be able to finish in the gap year. plus, it costs money rather than makes money, even with the TAships added in.

if you don't have any in-house connections, you can pretty much say goodbye to the 'big name' pharmaceutical companies. since they've got lots of bargaining power, they can afford to hire really really qualified scientists away from other companies. (another way to look at it - they use these starter companies to train/teach the scientists so by the time they get to bigpharma, they're like perfect worker bees) very sad ... but true.

look into biotech though, i've never known anyone with a decent academic record to fail in getting a job.

ty astrina for your insight.
