Just passing this on and wonder if this happens often.

A good friend of ours just graduated with a mech eng degree from a good Southern engineering school. He has had internships every summer, including some abroad, and got an offer from a well known national company for a job in Alaska. He's an adventurer, and I'm not surprised he took it. As he's single and a free spirit, he was looking forward to his new found spending money to buy a new jeep and finally enjoy life.

A month before start date, the company informed him that the new start up location would not be Alaska, but instead, would be Abu Dubai.

Of course, being the adventurer that he is, he's fine with it, although I don't know that he'll get much snow in the desert.

But holy cow, if this happened to my son, I'd be freaking out!

Does this kind of thing normally happen in engineering? Is there something written in the job offer usually where they can change your start up location at their own whim? Hopefully, if they do, you have an opt out clause.
